Re: Climate-Change-Friendly place in Canada?

@JuliusFC I love PEI. I currently live in Summerside and originally lived in Hamilton. Insurance is way cheaper. I pay about a third less for my home owner's insurance here. And my partner pays about a third of what he did for car insurance. Property tax is a bit cheaper. I'm currently paying $2k a ...

Re: Climate-Change-Friendly place in Canada?

I couldn't handle the heat and humidity of southern Ontario and moved to PEI which is more temperate than Nova Scotia or New Brunswick and has better farm land than Newfoundland. I bought a place 12 meters above sea level and wonder if that's high enough up, but I figure it should probably be fine f...

Re: Thoughts on Plastic Surgery?

As someone who used to be quite physically attractive and isn't any longer, I can say this. I have noticed zero difference between getting dates and jobs when I was younger and now. And frankly, people take me far more seriously now than they ever did when I was conventionally pretty. I do get sexua...

Re: Housemating

Interesting experiences and perspectives. I am a homeowner who rents (cheaply) to relatives. Currently, I live in a four-bedroom house with my brother and son and will soon be moving to a duplex where my brother and I will live in one three-bedroom apartment, and my son, and likely his girlfriend, w...

Re: Moving

I think I understand how you feel. My youth was chaotic and I longed for stability and a physical place that would embody it. It was a real triumph for me when, as a single mother, I was able to buy a not so fancy house in a safe neighbourhood. My kids loved growing up here. I quit working two years...

Re: How can you be (semi) retired while still having a mortgage?

I have a mortgage and have a net worth of $475k which is greater than it was a year and a half ago when I quit working. I used to think like you do. Years ago I declared in this forum that I would be FI when I had a paid off house and $225k. Now, in the community I where I will eventually live, I ha...

Re: ERE Challenge: Could You Retire on $300k?

Are you willing to have roommates?

In order to keep my current house, I need them. Otherwise I'd have to relocate.

I retired on a net worth of just under $400k in a medium cost of living area. I do live in Canada and have less worry about health care expenses.

Edited to fix typo.

Re: List your top three to fiveish typical dinner menus

1. lots of soups (chicken vegetable, cream of broccoli are the favourites) with homemade baguette 2. pasta with tomato sauce, vegetables, and parm or salsa 3. lately, lots of pulled pork (since pork prices are so low compared to other meat) with homemade rolls and sides of on sale vegetables 4. roas...

Re: Slomo, A Neurologist who gave it all up to skate

Slomo is such an inspiration. There is something that really resonates with that youtube video you posted too, Ego. All of my colleagues thought I was nuts to quit a "good job with benefits" especially since I didn't have anything lined up. I think the idea that I might be able to live on less than ...

Re: What's the safest place to live in a socioeconomically stratified city?

I would say away from bad schools would be better than towards good schools when going by that predictor. The good can drive kids to school of choice. The bad schools are at best a bunch of bored kids. Idle hands makes the Devil's work. At worst, everything that their parents are and more. I would ...

Re: What's the safest place to live in a socioeconomically stratified city?

I used to live in an apartment complex I later found out the police called the Zoo. Looking back, even though some of my neighbours were drug dealers, they didn't want the police showing up, so they were very friendly and generally made sure that things were seemly and not out of the ordinary. There...

Re: Do you consider yourself privileged?

Yes very much so, almost entirely through luck of the draw at birth. I agree! My first lesson in privilege was my father telling me when I was ten years old that he would never hire a woman, someone who was black, or anyone who was First Nations. Of course, he didn't use those words to describe the...

Spoon: Just curious to know if you plan to visit the old city of Quebec before you move on to Montreal. I think it is beautiful and the history is interesting. Also, you might get a chance to use more French than in Montreal if that is something you might like to do. My partner and I like to stay in...

Re: Walkscore

53 My house is worth about $230k and houses like mine can be rented for $1400/month. There are very few apartments for rent. Like Jennypenny, the walkscore doesn't really mean much to me since I can walk to almost anything I need including work for both my brother and me. I don't own a car and have ...

Re: Car-Free Living Feasibility

Good luck with your trial. I live in an area where winters are cold and snowy and public transit is infrequent, and I have never had a car. I walk and bike most places and maybe twice a month use public transit. I spend the summers on the east coast which is a 2 hour plane ride away and get along in...

Re: The cultural shift from sustainability to resilience

As a high school teacher, I can attest that education has not been the problem where I am, particularly when it comes to climate change. Denial seems to be the most popular response to any discomfort about how our lifestyle choices are impacting the planet. "The earth will just shrug it off," one st...

If you're that close, what's the worst that can happen? You have to get a part-time job?
This is also my attitude. Worst case scenario for me? Sell my house and move to another cheaper one and/or get a part-time job.

Re: Favourite FREE entertainment

I chose the words 'entertainment' and 'free' to try and limit responses. Obviously, that didn't work. I consider the library free entertainment even if it does come out of property tax. I cannot avoid paying property tax. I enjoy hiking, cycling and most other outdoor activities but I see them as a...

Re: spoonman's Journal

It's amusing that the attitude toward Walkscore is rather different between the MMM and ERE forums. :D In this case, I'm more ERE. My brother lived in Montreal when he was in university and loved it for the culture and how close everything is. He is rooming with me in suburbia now and I think it mak...
