Re: The Education of Axel Heyst
Fair enough and probably a bad example with no context. I don't mean to imply having to take shitty (ha) jobs is necessary for an integrated system or think that it would necessarily be a failure. There is no system that exists in isolation and sometimes systems conflict. How do you maintain the ...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst
The 'let Brandon cook' quote and mindset kind of struck the wrong note with me. Other than not liking Ferris too much, I wasn't sure why until I read 7w's reply. It just seems to have some kind of Randian 'great man' vibe to it that is so annoyingly prevalent these days. Your writing generally seems ...

No desire for chickens here, but I did put up a bluebird house last year. Spring cabbage worm population suffered from the constant effort to keep a couple of noisy bluebird babies fed. I'll also admit that squishing cabbage worms between thumb and finger is very satisfying

Hey GP, it's awesome to hear how well you are settling into the Spanish life! I haven't seen you over in the Foraging Log for a few months. Any prospects for the new locale?

Re: ffj's Early Retirement (round 2)
In foodservice, I encountered two kinds of sharpening services. One was guy in a step van with the equipment and he'd drive around to restaurants, hotels etc. and sharpen personal knives on the spot. Usually an inventory of knives and other equipment for purchase was on the van, too. In more ...

I went back to school at 46yo for something that had been in the back of my mind since 19 or 20. Sometimes I'm mad at myself for waiting so long, but mostly I'm happy I got at bunch of different experiences over those 26 years. It's never too late. Sounds like a good plan!

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you are looking for, but these are some albums that I tend to listen to all the way through when I have a chance. Almost all live recordings because I do enjoy when the music comes through as a whole performance. I'll let the listener categorize.

It's great to see your new journal and I'm looking forward to your tinkering. I am reorganizing my garage workshop and intend to increase compressed air storage/tools. I have also been inspired by that low tech magazine article. I've never been too excited about stationary biking, though, so I'm ...

As I typed 'a blast to drive', I pictured Jacob, his head sticking out of an old Targa while sitting in Chicago traffic, and almost had to delete that as a selling point.not terribly good in LA traffic

I'm asking about the point where a car is not something you need&outsource&dispose but something you want&insource&takecareof. I suppose the @Sclass would answer with the S-class. Are there others? Classic cars? The Geo Metro? A DeLorean?

Serviceberry (Amelanchier spp, probably alnifolia) Found three nice size bushes near the path I run loaded up with ripe berries. They are pretty tasty, though not super sweet and with noticeable seeds. The seeds do add a nice little crunch to the morning yogurt! The timing is perfect, too, due to ...

Related to Jacob's comment above, over the last 12 or so years since my dad passed away, I have watched my mom really grow into herself as a person. I think she had a pretty conservative/traditional view of her role in marriage, yet, after a couple of years of grieving, has really opened up into a ...

Re: Where do you get music?
I second @WRC's suggestions on internet radio and live music.
Given that I like a wide variety of music, have no real desire to hear things over and over and don't want to buy/own anything (or deal with ripping, uploading etc) I have been listening to internet radio pretty exclusively for a few ...

To bring it back to 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'...

@Slevin - Nice work! I have been using up an old redwood swing set for various garden structures. The 8-9foot 4x4s are now a blackberry trellis, bird feeder posts, bottom support for a row of rain barrels and (cut shorter) the base of a potting/seed starting bench. The 4x6 top beam is the base of a ...

Re: Upgrading to fiber to the home?
I upgraded when AT&T brought fiber through our neighborhood maybe 6 or 7 years ago. 1G - $70/mo 'limited time offer! will never go up!' So far it has not gone up. Questionable whether I am seeing 1G though. I checked around not long ago and there were no better deals to be had. I've never tried to ...
