Re: How good is your career for pre-retirement quiz

E.g. are the tools of the trade easily accessible? If you're a programmer or a carpenter, the answer is yes. If you're a helicopter pilot or an FBI agent, the answer is likely no. If no, you have to pursue this as a job/career because it does not exist at the recreational level. We may have diverge...

But it's your quiz, so feel free to dismiss.
It isn't my quiz. As I said in the OP you all can change or amend it as you please. I am simply trying to play the host and provide questions and commentary.

Re: How good is your career for pre-retirement quiz

Might want to add: Would you stop going to work if you were FI/didn't need the money? Is your job generally meaningless in the grand scheme of things? (Making forgettable widgets for WhoCares or flipping digits on trading computer screen) Does you job lack war stories/good memories that you will on...

@EdithKeeler

Is it virtually unheard of for people to do this job as a small business or freelance if you decide to do a little on the side?

How good is your career for pre-retirement quiz

How bad is/was your job for pre-retirement? Feel free to change or amend it. Each positive response is worth 1 point. Lower scores are better. Do you make less than the median income? Is your job highly specialized with few opportunities to do things outside your expertise? Is the core thing you do ...

Re: Is constructing a portfolio just another way to beat the market?

It is hard to think that someone shoving money into a 401k because they heard it was a good idea is putting much thought into beating the market. ;) What about the people who run the funds they invest in? Surely they are trying to beat the market right? Well they get paid based of how much money is ...

Gold should outperform in a downturn. The problem is that it is hard to know when one will happen. Your portfolio revolves around 2 highly concentrated bets, gold and a house. That is kind of risky. Certainly there are other things that you could diversify into that would be crash resistant like uti...

I think I would prefer a tent on BLM land. Still if I had to be institutionalized I wonder if an insane asylum would be better. :?

In the first example it seems that Alice doesn't have the skills necessary to empathize. In the second Bob isn't making the connection between why the words being an abstraction makes a difference in this case. Besides clearly the egg came first. Dinosaurs layed eggs long before chickens evolved fro...

Those things yes. Also interest rates. The dollar is so strong right now because we keep raising rates and so traders borrow in other currencies and make loans in dollars, but a lot of pressure is being put on the fed to stop.

Blocking the absorption of iron isn't that bad for a male. Men are rarely low on iron because we don't bleed once a month. Too much iron on the other hand causes oxidative stress. Also iron from veggies are poorly absorbed anyway unlike from animal sources.

Re: Nonconformity is the highest evolutionary attainment of social animals

I am a non-conformist with regard to my savings rate and not eating the standard American diet. I consider both to be a success. The non-conformity doesn't seem to affect my ability to give or receive help from the group. Of course more severe non-conformist activities like becoming a hermit would.

Re: Thoughts on the new Gillette Ad

Gillette is not male (ingroup) it is a legal entity (trademark) owned by another legal entity Procter and Gamble and owned by millions of people including me. It itself has no gender. The ad was directed by a feminist woman named Kim Gehrig. The Gillette ad isn’t about race stereotypes It is about g...

Re: Thoughts on the new Gillette Ad

In much of the West, men commit ~90% of violent crime (often against women), seek less professional help for (mental) problems, and are several times more likely to use drugs or to commit suicide. Can you imagine an ad like this for other statistically more violent groups? What if they showed black...
