Re: YoungAndWise's Journal

Estonia had its own political change of course today, although perhaps not quite as unpredictable and with somewhat less of a worldwide impact:) The would-be new government has already rushed to confirm the 2+%* principle will remain a priority though. * that is 2% of the GDP, not of the budget, the...

Re: Flatmate hanging around the house

I suggest you talk to her about your conditions then. Passive-agressively expecting someone to comply with rules they are not aware of is probably not a very effective way to go about this. People have different priorities and preferences. I probably wouldn't be able to tell a sanitised place from a...

Re: Flatmate hanging around the house

When you agreed to her moving in, did you actually tell her that she will be expected to leave the house regularly on weekends, sanitise things and spaces, and not use the dryer? All of these strike me as your preferences, which might well be reasonable but not necessarily intuituve to someone else.

Every item listed above, except for OP's and Dragline's very last ones, simply serve to increase a net worth that was already higher than needed:)

Re: Nonline financial services

The holy grail solution has always been public key crypto (unique private key) embedded into your social security card, passport, driver's license, whatever. The government can maintain, publish the public keys or hash of public keys. Much better attestation, assurance of identity and so much cool ...

Re: What Percentage of Expenses should go to Rent?

If I were to rent my apartment, it would be about 20% of my after tax monthly pay or about 28% of my currently necessary expenses (including that hypothetical rent).

This. Even if you can find a paper interface for your dealings (which tends to be the more expensive way?), it does not mean that your information will be stored or processed offline.

Re: Dynamo lighting

My bike came with a Shimano generator hub and a connected incandescent front light. It's been working fine for 10 years and thousands of kms. The light is not quite bright enough though. Does anyone have any experience replacing the light on something like this with a LED front+back light set? I wou...

Re: Best Solar Power for Macbook Pro and Cell Phone?

The type and size of the panel you need largely depends on where you are or expect to be going.

I've had good experience with these, but they were bought and tested with Central Africa in mind.

Re: What have you had to unlearn to grow?

I've had to unlearn the idea that if I could just 'find my passion' I'd be all set. Passion doesn't pay the bills and doesn't always last. I also think the more intelligent/determined/industrious you are, the faster you can burn through your passions. We need a support group. puttylike.com isn't do...

Re: Cashless society?

@jacob - What you describe is possible based on employers declaring their payroll taxes (usually monthly) and that information is simply presented to the salaryman to confirm. It's common courtesy in modern bureaucracy to not ask for the same information twice. What they're trying to do now though i...

How long before the government is doing our taxes for us and just letting us know how much they are going to withdraw from our accounts on April 15th? The tax authority in Estonia has now declared it their vision to get completely rid of tax declarations by 2020. They would get all the information ...
