Best Answer for Meyers Briggs Question?

Post by Nyarmith »

Hail ERE-friends!
Question...
If my workplace does some teambuilding BS with meyers-briggs, which choice makes me look the best?
I'm sure it will vary on environment, but in your average corporate areat they probably want something that's either the same as the boss or some type of extroverted perception one. I'd assume the least emotions and most getting things done.

I'm just not sure what "stories" are associated with each type and which one sells the best.

This also leads me to wonder what the best answer would be given any person asks. I'm generally not too good at immediately grapsing what kind of person someone is unless I'm in that sort of mood that day so heuristics appreciated.

I'm guessing a type that is way different from who you are (of from who you are at work) is not so smart. I can't remember all the types, but imagine that you're a non-emotional, rather introverted person who makes work decisions quickly and without a doubt, then claiming you're a extraverted emotional person who is never sure about anything may not be "believable", and rightly so.

That's obvious/tangential to the question. If we can choose to be represented in any way what is the best?

If they do it right, it's in your best interests to answer honestly. I've given my bosses a personality/work-style reports I've gotten from a previous test thing at work (it was good - it had info on how I think and make decisions, and how best to work with and influence me), and I think it helped them understand how to work with me better. One way I think it helped is that when I had more things to do than were possible to do well, and I self-prioritized, my boss thought I was scared of the things I was choosing not to do. Reading reading that report might have shined some light on the fact that I was instead choosing to do what was making more of a difference, or, how I personally could make more of a difference.

If the facilitator and your bosses are idiots and are going to mess it up, or for some other reason the group is going to look at the styles as good or bad - then it depends on your job. What do you do? If you're trying to get a promotion - to what position? Different styles will look better for different roles.

I agree with @DutchGirl. I don't think that the point she makes is tangental. I read your post and my immediate response was that you can answer this question more easily than with more precision anyone here can. What is your work situation? What are your work aspirations? Does where you work have a belief that all being similar in working style is important? Not all employers do and some definitely value a different 'take'.

It made me wonder whether your question is based on a real or imagined dilemma. Have you tried doing a Myers-Briggs test yourself? That sounds like a good first step - especially if you think its BS without trying it. Whatever your score you can easily answer your own questions about what types are out there yourself. Or (knowing more) post a question with some more context so that we can try and answer it.

There is an undercurrent in your post that you want a quick fix universal answer. I am not sure that ERE forums are a place to find those. Most advice here will require you to do a lot of the work yourself.
