I don't buy it. The crotchet guy that is. Isn't that a slow process? How many beanies can you do a day while in school? Five? At $10 each is $50/day. $18k/year. Possible but sounds strange.
Something else must be going on. Of course the story is missing details.

I agree about the crochet work not adding up.
That said, I am personally friends with a dozen or so people who are doing similar things to pay for living expenses and schooling for themselves or their children. Some are illegal, a few have green cards, but most have nothing more than a passport and visa that allows them to enter the U.S. each day. They buy junk at auctions like this one and this one, store it in a storage locker then resell at our local flea markets. They do everything (banking, federal taxes, vehicle registration, business license, sales tax certificate) in the name of a trusted friend or relative. The auctions require some of these documents to bid and the flea markets requires others to sell regularly.
