I picked up this term of art from Tami at Rowdy Kittens. She uses it to explain her lack of postings on weekends. For me it signifies a brief departure from the interwebs into the hardscape.
I will be recreating on the central coast of California for the next ten days, and I don't plan on being anywhere near a computer. While my presence on these forums approaches insignificance compared to other luminaries, I learned a valuable lesson from Trish's long pause on SIF. So I don't want anyone to take my absence for a fit of pique or the result of some catastrophe. I will return by early September.
As we coalesce into a community with some regard for each other, perhaps others will take up the custom of announcing their digital vacations.

Enjoy yourself! I hope to hear more about what you learned about yourself and life those years as a monk! I will be out shortly after you get back for 4-5 days during the labor day weekend.

I like turning off the digital items every once in awhile. Read a book, walk, beaches, camping, etc...
Very relaxing.

Have fun!

I couldn't take a digital vacation at this point. On my return I'd be hopelessly drowning in unread stuff. It has come so far that I now dread going out with friends, because it means staying awake the next night to catch up with my mail and rss feeds.
Glad you are more detached. I need to become more like you, but for the moment too much is at stake. Maybe when I'll have decided on an investment strategy.
Thanks for warning us so we won't worry about you. :-)

Take care and enjoy the vacation. I usually take a digital vacation every weekend and catch up on Monday. I occasionally break this rule with a quick check of Facebook or fantasy hockey.

I'm back. The coast was AWESOME (Jacob's favorite word). I enjoyed myself so much I started looking for a cheap rental to accelerate ER and become a beach bum. They might exist, but the evidence for "cheap" was scant at best. Ah well, a couple more years of the salt mine...

Going on another DV. This time it's the high school reunion, complete with homecoming football and a round of golf (at the cheap municipal course because I'm not paying for some country club's water bill), and the rubber chicken dinner. I'm going to see how folks react to the ERE philosophy, since I was the guy voted Most Likely to Succeed. Somehow, I don't think that characterization included driving a 15-year-old pickup and trying to escape paid employment. Any converts or skeptics will be refered to Jacob's book.

Love that idea--turn the commo off!! Check out of the net.

Especially a cell phone. Anyone recall when we lived completely without them?

_I_ find doing without a cellphone very easy... I didn't get a cellphone until 1994 when I was traveling a fair amount and my father was undergoing hip surgery. Didn't renew after the year's contract was up. Still have troubles relating to people who would rather talk on their cellphone than interact with visitors.
On the other hand... It's been 30 years since I've been without a computer! Many useful programs, many not-so-useful. 27 years of email (yes, my first modem was a 300 baud acoustic built from the Ciarcia's Circuit Cellar kit). 26 years of internet access. Very hard to unplug from the net and turn away from nice useful tools for the imagination like a word processor, spreadsheet, GIS, CAD, and digital images (still and motion).

I feel very alone in my utter shunning of facebook... but maybe I'm not:
