Chiang Mai 2024 Meetup

Post by Western Red Cedar »

When: Monday December 9th, 2024 - 5:00 pm

Where: Food Court at One Nimman (ground floor)

1NIMMANHAEMIN ROAD, SUTHEP, MUENG CHIANG MAI, THAILAND 50200

https://www.onenimman.com/market/

https://www.onenimman.com/about/

------

The food court has about 30 food stalls and some cater to vegetarians and vegans (we can vouch for the vegan pesto pasta and vegan caesar salad). You can also bring your own food, but there are plenty of cheap options available. Lots of great Northern Thai options, along with Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese and Western food. They will likely have some live music/buskers.

We can hang out and talk for a while, then head to over to the One Night Ground Flea Market across the street (open 4-10 pm).

I think we have six confirmed attendees thus far. Please add your name if you plan to attend.

That sounds fun. I'm curious if at meetups people use their real name or online name ? So do people call Ego Ego, for example? :)

People use their real names in my experience. Introductions tend to go like: Hi, I'm Tyler, Axel Heyst on the forum.

I'm making a slight adjustment to the meetup time for December 9th. I'll pm the attendees with details. Look forward to seeing everyone in a couple days!

I am on a trip in Penang, Malaysia for two weeks before returning to Thailand, otherwise, I'd be very tempted to come meet you, especially after having had the pleasure of connecting with Ego.

Hope you all have a great time there!

My home base is Bangkok, and if anyone is visiting the city, I'd be happy to meet. Otherwise, I'm planning to spend a few days in Chiang Mai, and three-four weeks in Pai from January 12.

@OOTB - I'll definitely contact you if I'm heading through Bangkok again. I'm in Chiang Mai through early January, and still figuring out plans after that. Hopefully our paths cross.

We had a successful meetup in Chiang Mai. Seven attendees made it out for five hours of conversation, food, and drinks. The flea market wasn't quite as vibrant as the last time we visited, but DW and I were able to introduce others to a couple of our favorite spots in the Nimman neighborhood. It was really nice connecting with additional members of the ERE community.

Later this week some of us will be meeting up to check out the Dream Space Gallery, which is one of the most unique, creative and inspiring places I've visited over the last year.

We may also meet up for a hike later this month. Others are welcome to send me a pm if they are in the area.

Here's an article about the area we live in (Nimmanhaemin, Chiang Mai): http://magazine.theascender.org/issue-4 ... manhaemin/
Ten years ago, I read this article in Akratic's journal comparing the visitors to Chiang Mai with Hemingway's group in 1920's Paris, Kerouac and the Beats of the 1950s or Didion's 1960s San Francisco scene. At the time, I was skeptical. The longer I am here, the more I am convinced. There is something epic about this place and the people who inhabit it.

The mag has gone defunct but the author posted the article on his website

We followed up our original meetup with a Christmas Eve dinner at DW's favorite (non-Thai) restaurant in Chiang Mai. Ten people made it out this time. It was lovely sharing a meal and conversation with others over the holidays. Hat tip to @2b1s for organizing and inviting some like-minded friends to join. We've done some smaller group activities over the last few weeks as well.

Here are a couple photos of the area and festivities as we walked back after dinner through Old Town:
