Super Data Thread

Post by okumurahata »

I open this thread to gauge interest in collecting statistics from this forum and the best method to achieve/display it. Some random things that I find interesting to know:

A. Age when achieving ERE (Int)
B. Years to ERE (Int)
C. Career until ERE [Array]
D. Salary until ERE [Array]
E. Number of posts until ERE (Int)
F. Withdrawal Rate until ERE [Array]

Example:

Code: Select all

A = 33
B = 5
C = [PhD student, Engineer, Engineer, Librarian, Librarian]
D = [15000, 40000, 40000, 25000, 25000]
E = 857
F = [60.5, 37.5, 20, 7.5, 3.5]
It should be easy afterwards to collect data and calculate means, averages, variances, etc.

It’s too much work? Any ideas or more variables that members find interesting?

With C, you're quickly going to run into the "library"-problem of having dozens or hundreds of different categories. I suggest just dropping it.

F seems irrelevant as it's pretty much captured by B. Replace with either spending [Array] or savings rate [Array].

We know what you mean, but I suggest replacing ERE with FI.

I'd be very interested to see

- ttmCol <milestone>
- years/months of stash given ttmCol at <milestone>

Where milestone is ... ?? SemiERE? Quit career? FI?

I think text analysis towards "bottom-up" induction decision tree algorithm and clustering could produce more interesting results than a simple statistical survey.

I don't understand milestone in this context? Do you mean target?

B. Years to ERE (Int)
Starting when? Age 18? Age of first idea of “I should save”? Age of first idea to retire? Age of first idea to FI? To FIRE? Age at discovering any FIRE-related resource (ERE, MMM, bogleheads, YMOYL, other)? Age at joining the forum?

I find it complicated to agree on the data to collect and to get people to provide information adapted to a model.

It’s also usually a problem that users create multiple posts per thread, leading to repeated or inconsistent data.

Probably all the data needed is currently on the forums, but it’s difficult to sort. Or at least, I don’t know where to start.

Hmm. I am trying to ask, how much stash (in terms of multiples of ttmCol ) did you have saved when you [Quit Working, Quit your Career, Reached FI, Decided to SemiERE,...].

Maybe the question of SemiERE vs ERE with FI vs something else (ones path?) needs to be asked first. My motivation for this question is trying to have something of a guide post/example for when people broadly "take the plunge". I'm tracking my ttmCol and I know how many years worth of savings I have given that ttmCol. There has been discussion about "Geez, looking back I could have taken the plunge earlier because my NW keeps growing". Personally, I believe I have enough NW that I could pull the plunge if my expenses were lower/closer to others on the forum. (One of my big expenses is non adult dependents and related travel). I think it would be helpful to know the data and hear the stores of "I had X in the bank then, and now I have Y" to help make more informed decisions about when is enough to quit salary man life. Did I explain that well?

Another question: Did you arrive here via FIRE? (It seems that most do? I did not.)
