Re: Investments Trade Log
SDRL cancelled the debt offering and is bouncing pre-market. Can't decide whether to just take profit or hold onto it. I'll probably take the money and run.
Re: Investments Trade Log
A roughly 5% gain in one day isn't bad.

Held onto SDRL. Not enough of a pop today to make it worth selling.

Definitely not enough of a pop.

Re: Investments Trade Log
Anyone invest in the VIX or considering it? Or XVIX?
Re: Investments Trade Log
No. I've seen Ritholtz suggest it is not well correlated to volatility (on Bloomberg a week or two ago). Though, I could have misheard/remembered it, as it wasn't what I was listening for at the time.
But, I'm looking at doubling down on Gazprom. Shooting down the airliner is the death of the Ukrainian revolution. Russia can't play the long game now, as this has caused the sanctions to be quickly tightened. Putin has to either back the rebels fully or get out, and get out is the more likely scenario.

Re: Investments Trade Log
Thanks for the link. Though, it doesn't concern me too much. Gazprom has consistently cooperated with Moscow, so much so that they have often been accused of being an arm of the government. This makes me doubt that other companies will be able too muscle a large portion of the pipes for themselves. Even if Gazprom only keeps half, that is still $200M more than they had and they are already undervalued.jennypenny wrote:http://www.themoscowtimes.com/business/ ... 03869.htmlChad wrote:But, I'm looking at doubling down on Gazprom.
Anyway, if I added to my position at this level, and I probably will because of the airliner being shot down (I would not want to be the Russian who was in charge of training the rebels. I'm sure Putin wants that guy's head on a pike.), that would make a portion of my position a trade of maybe a few months. I wouldn't want to hold that much as a long term investment.
Though, I may look to put a long-term investment into a Russian ETF like RSX and maybe a small amount as a gamble with RUSL (a leveraged ETF). Russia has made their point with Crimea and the rebellion. They don't want EU/US adding the Ukraine to NATO, and EU/US don't want to risk war for such little gain. Everything isn't going to completely quiet down, but the airliner looks like the peak.
This peak makes a good entry point into one of the few economies that hasn't seen a big gain after the crash.

@Chad--Sorry, I wasn't clear. I posted that article as good news for you. I'm looking at it as a trader, not an investor. If you are going to buy Gazprom, that news might give you a good entry point today.
I added it to today's watch list myself.

Good point. I still struggle to think like a trader with my initial evaluation. This explains why I have difficulty with micro timing, but not macro. I almost always look at an investment as long-term. I hope you are correct and Gazprom goes down today, but Putin may have gotten out in front of me a little.jennypenny wrote:@Chad--Sorry, I wasn't clear. I posted that article as good news for you. And I have the opposite problem (see the Boom/Bubble thread).Chad wrote:I still struggle to think like a trader with my initial evaluation. This explains why I have difficulty with micro timing, but not macro.

Added a little Gazprom today.

Here is a very interesting article on investing in farmland, which may tie into some macro ideas on this forum.

Re: Investments Trade Log
I started investing in late 2012, so take everything I say with a large grain of salt.
I invest mostly in high tech growth stock with a solid balance sheet.
Here is my current portfolio:
25% - Apple
20% - Gilead Sciences
9% - Recipharm
5.5% - Micron Technology
5.5% - First Solar
15% - Avanza Zero(swedish large cap index fund)
5.5% - Vanguard Total Stock Market(VTI)
14.5% - Cash
My most recent purchase is Gilead Sciences, bought last week before earnings.
I've previously held Tesla Motors and Nvidia, both fine companies that I am hopeful I'll get a chance to buy back when the price is right. I'm buying Tesla again if it drops below $180, depending on circumstances.

Re: Investments Trade Log
I bought a few VIX calls for January.
Re: Investments Trade Log
Sold all my Gazprom on Friday. Putin is acting irrationally and operating under old school rules (19th and early 20th century) Europe is cowering in fear, so this will probably get worse before it gets better. I'm surprised he is painting himself into this corner.

Bought BDCL and CEFL
Re: Investments Trade Log
Was surprised to check my investments, and saw the market took a big dip the past few days. I'll probably be picking some stuff up mid-next week if there hasn't been a strong recovery. Any bluechips looking more attractive than usual? PG, ABBV, NVDA are approaching reasonable prices.
Re: Investments Trade Log
Picked up ESP and HVT this week. 4% and 1.4% dividend, respectively. No long term debt.
Both about 3.5% of my actively managed portfolio.
