just fyi, i have read that 1.5 mil puts you in the top 5% of net worth for the US. but i understand 2 mil might be comfortable for you. we each have our own level of being comfortable; 1 mil wouldnt be comfortable enough for me unless i was at least 60.

My yearly spending is under $10,000 so 2 mil would give me over 200 years of living expenses...I'd be pretty comfortable :D

I currently have about 60 years of living expenses in reserve. And that is longer than I expect to live. The question for me with regards to additional money is whether I can use the surplus to change other lives for the [holistic!] better. Not necessarily human life.

Animals?

Yeah I think at a certain point some philanthropy should occur if not along the way. Especially once one's own needs are more than taken care of.

sorry if I was being cryptic. It's a pet peeve when others are!

Water to sail in! or at least a reasonable path to get to some water to sail in. I retain this pipe dream of blue water sailing for a couple of months at a time.....(At a glance I do not see how the Chilko lake in BC could connect to the Pacific coastline. Vanceburg on the other hand is along the Ohio were I currently sail (in a wide spot) and getting to the Gulf is not big deal.)

Looking at those tracts for sale flashed me back to homesteading etc and having land. I started a homesteading entry in personal journal and if I can massage it into something that does not sound like a crazy person wrote it I will put it in my ERE journal. spoiler-being totally self sufficient is indeed a noble trait but there are too many other fun things to do! Owning a 5 or so acre tract that joins a large public spread seems ideal. That is just big enough to have a garden and some firewood but hike around on the public land like it is your own.

So as not to completely derail the thread......I agree that some large, unique tracts of land are a very reasonable place to store/use extra wealth and if they match up with some personal interests that is even better.

@henders - I presume that I can at least match inflation (in the long run). So it's a simple estimate.
