Exercise/Fitness Log
Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
Yeah, I think that or something similar (slow-carb advocated by Tim Ferris) is the way to go.
Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
I like Tim Ferris and Robb Wolf, because they're two smart guys who can have both the scientific conversations and give the real world laymans versions that's really needed to get people started.
I've seen your interested in IF, have you read all of Martin Berkhan's stuff? He's kind of intense, especially in his ridicule of bro-science, but his system is very adaptable to any diet and flat out works.

Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
Agreed on Ferris and Wolf. I like that they provide detailed reasons and sources so you can double check their research. I know some people are turned off by Ferris' being an overbearing salesman sometimes, but the guy really does his research.
I haven't heard of Berkhan. I will have to take a look, as I do thinking fasting has a place. Maybe 1-2 days a month. I would need to see serious evidence for more than that.

You can find Martin at http://www.leangains.com/.
His system is that you should fast for 12-16 hours every day (aka 8 hour eating window), that you should lift heavy, and eat high-carb/low fat with a caloric surplus on lifting days, and low carb with a small caloric deficit on off days. He also recommends eating the bulk of your calories post-workout.

Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
Yeah, I'm not following that. I've done the high carb/low fat before (obviously, without the fasting). It sucked. I was hungry all the time and saw little gains in working out.
Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
Please don't take my previous response wrong. I appreciate the suggestion. Just that high carb/low fat is not for me.

Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
So...I tripped running and fractured my tibia. I can't do anything (not even swimming) until after my scan is done. (They ordered a scan because it's the same leg that I had surgery on last year and they want to make sure that it's just bad luck and not something else.) I asked (begged) for permission to swim or lift if I promised to be careful. He told me "I'm shutting you down for now, and if I see you at the gym, I'll put you in a cast up to your neck."
The downside (aside from no exercise) is that it's my right leg, so if they decide the boot isn't enough and put a cast on it, I can't drive.
The upside is I have an excuse to skip yoga

In my sailing days I could close the 200 pound gripper. Not quite anymore.
PS: If you do any exercise that requires coordination, you can still benefit from visualization. You might even be able to keep your powerlifting neurons from decaying too much by simply thinking about nerve connections. The shinkendo people talked about this quite a bit: Yeah, whenever your on the BART start thinking about kata. If you're in your office, grap a pencil and cut some mats ...

@jacob--Haha, I'll look like Wreck it Ralph after using those for a couple of months.
I think I can still do bag work. The speed bag will be easy since I can sit on a bar stool while I use it. I'll figure something out for the heavy bag.

At the bar, drink in one hand, speed bag for the other. Pictures or it didn't happen!
Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
That is terrible. I am sorry to hear it. Has your gym got one of these?

Sorry jp.
After your scan comes back clean, I am going to begin hounding you to get rehabbed to come to the October meet up!

Sorry to hear it, but I do find the image of you sitting on a bar stool, while simultaneously punching a speed bag and a heavy bag to be ratherjennypenny wrote:@jacob--Haha, I'll look like Wreck it Ralph after using those for a couple of months.

You could always buy some battle ropes.

Sorry to hear about your injury, wish you a speedy recovery.
I once cracked my right knuckle punching a violent miscreant and his pal in the face on a late night train in Mumbai. That was more than a couple of decades ago..still hurts my hand sometimes. Can't imagine what tibia fracture pain would feel like.

OTOH, I could always use a Camelbak...
Scan today, and then you guys can help me figure out how to get in a full workout on one leg.

Talks about trade-offs with caloric restriction, hormesis, and other things we've talked about. Makes me wonder if an imbalance in this area is the reason endurance athletes have a higher incidence of cancer.

Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
It seems like we are just now pulling back the curtain on nutrition, fitness, body function, etc. So, while I'm actually a big fan of Ferris and agree with these conclusions, there are probably other factors we don't know about yet. Since I NEVER plan on participating in extreme "exercise" sports (100 mile runs, 1000 lbs squats, etc.) I'm not concerned that hard exercise is going to take off years of my life. If what I do causes me to die at 82 instead of 84, but I put off the dregs of old age an extra 9-10 years through intense strength training...I'm fine with that. In fact, I would have no problem taking some cocktail of strength enhancing drugs when I hit 70. I would be 70. How much worse could it get?

Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
It's been years since I was actively interested in 'fitness', but "free radicals/damage produced by endurance exercise" was an area of concern 5-10 years ago. I'm reluctant to speculate since I know little about physiology, but if endurance sports process a lot of oxygen, which is, ironically, highly reactive, it makes sense?
Re: Exercise/Fitness Log
Exactly, JP. There appears to be a trade-off between extreme performance and longevity -- I've learned a lot about this by following those calorie restrictors. Many of them monitor IGF-1 regularly.
A certain balance must be struck. Where that balance is, though, is not clear. But I think it is away from steady state endurance exercise and more toward stochastic or fractalized exercise regimes.

Random Note for Everyone:
To interrupt this conversation of extreme performance, I've made a major accomplishment in my weight loss.
Lost 10 lbs. in two weeks. Evidently the Fresh15 is full of shit in my situation (then again most the things leading to that are lifestyle choices.)
Now onto my next challenge!
Get down from 260 lbs (current weight) to 240 by the November 20. This is doable in my situation considering the gym is free at our school and just down the street--literally. I'm just choosing because I a)most of the lost weight could water weight and b)rate at which I lose it could slow drastically.
Not only that but it is for a grade-for Kinesiology to specific.
