Everything in moderation?
Generally speaking I would say exercise as a by-product of other things (transporting yourself around, gardening, whatever) rather than as a sole activity in itself would be the more sensible route.

Thats a pretty cool idea. I like the idea of just living a really busy life where you don't need "sport" to keep fit.
In fact, if you do that... and you don't need sport for fitness, you could then play sport purely for enjoyment! Then you can spend less time and money on "fitness". Spending hours per week to burn fat and so on... when you could instead be doing something more fun... I like.
On the other hand, if you are going to do a sport I think moderation is silly. Like financial independence, big goals help both sharpen the mind and give purpose. If you want to run - you should aim big... 16 minute 5k or run a marathon. If you want to play soccer, you should aim to be Div 1 in your local competitive league. Stuff like that...
This is afterall an EXTREME website! I heard Jacob will actually take part in the X games next year. Motocross, skateboarding, early retirement, these are the events of X games 2011.

True, but then you (or the OP) wouldn't be worried about it causing heart disease :) I think there is a difference between people who exercise to remain healthy and fit and save money on their medical expenses, and those that do it for fun/to prove that it can be done.
So... everything in moderation... except the one or two things where you want to break records, and those you don't worry about any unavoidable consequences, just improving the thing itself?

@jacob: rhabdomyolosis. It's a bit messed up that they would joke about doing this to themselves.

I agree with conscious risk desicions. I would rather die cycling than live sitting:)

Rhabdomyolysis can be a really nasty situation. I've treated a few patients with it, none from crossfitting-- mine were almost all from large crush injuries. Probably about half of them died, though there is almost certainly a large selection and recall bias to that number.

ERE Causes Socially Enigmatic Class: Traits include strong will and abrasiveness.
Tongue in cheek of course, but there will always be downsides to everything, as alluded to in this thread. See you on the sidelines, suckaz.

I imagine marathon starts being a little like the battle at Pelenor in Lord of the Rings with the race committee running up and down the line before the starting gun going "Death! Run now! Run to ruin and the world is ending. Deeeeaaaath!!! Deeeeeaaaaathh!!!!!!!!" :-D
