What do you do on weekends?

Simple living, extreme early retirement, becoming and being wealthy, wisdom, praxis, personal growth,...

It is quite apparent that blog and forum traffic tends to slow down significantly on weekends (by about 20-30%) with the weekend typically starting Friday afternoon, so hanging out on the internet is not it.
I usually have a sail race 1-2 times a month. Sometimes I manage to arrange a shinkendo session. If I'm not doing anything I just hang out at home with DW. September will be particularly "ugly". I got 4 races, 1 ERE meetup, and 1 all-weekend seminar. Basically, I will have <2 nights off per (7 day) week on average for the entire September, ugh!

I usually walk, go for a hike in the forest, meet friends, do laundry, and make calls. The next few weekends, I am going to be out picking mushrooms every weekend I can get. :-)

I do plenty of things, not all in ER way. However geocaching is pretty cool and free (with just onetime investment in some GPS device - you can buy it from 50 bucks on eBay). I also love biking (both for commuting and for fun).

I am currently in a struggle with the transformation of time management from a working life, to time management in a retired status. I am finding that I need a "To Do" schedule and Planner more in retirement than I did in business. I feel this is caused by my false perception that there would be more "time" available in retirement. When more time is thought to be available, we tend to envision more activities and projects to fill it up. I have decided that the "things" you read about retired people doing are somewhat of an illusion. I have been retired for six months and have yet to walk on a sandy beach, or wet a hook fishing for a bass. I have also not let go of my previous business, at least in the mental factor, and find myself still involved in some things with it. I hope this stops in the near future.

I am finding this blog and forum has helped me to ease into my new retired life. I am especially interested in the viewpoints of others at any or all stages of their lives. I never log on here without learning something of value.

I am currently unable to refrain from being self-demanding, and strive to make each day count for some kind of an achievement.

Here was my weekend:

SATURDAY:

Made a short list of 10 home projects to accomplish this week.

Made a trip to Lowe's to obtain the materials for the projects in order to have them ready and on hand.

Went to a military funeral. (VA Cemetery-2:00 pm)

Stopped by Daughter's house to pick up an antique vanity I am going to refinish for her.

Back home, fired up the grill for Hamburgers and Hot dogs as out of town friends are coming to visit the evening. Assist wife in preps for the evening.

Popped on line to post a few thought here.

SUNDAY:

After coffee with wife on front porch, we go for a long walk at the park.

Wife prepares breakfast.

After breakfast, we have "admin" time where we discuss anything upcoming the next week, and go through any piled up mail, and check planners on any matters of importance.

Wife leaves to check on her mom at the nursing home, and I go to my office to work on some American Legion matters, and file the mail we just went through.

I begin the first home project of clearing and washing down the back deck to apply the fall coat of "Thompson's Water Sealer".

Wife returns at 5:00pm and we snarf up the left over burgers from the previous night's cookout.

I come here and post a few stupid things on the forum.

Wife does her hair. (When she does this she disappears in the bathroom for several (seemingly) hours.)

In between all this we are both on the phone off and on constantly with both important and trivial matters.

At 10:00 pm wife announces that she is "done" for the weekend and sinks into her favorite chair, with her current book, and a "light" snack.

I am thinking the same thing and move a little between the computer and my XBOX for a while, and then shower and collapse in the like manner. It is now around 12:00 pm. We haul it off to bed in another 30 minutes.
That was this weekend. It was extremely light in nature. Hopefully, next weekend we will go to the RV and try and do some "retired" things.

Hike, bike, kayak, sometimes I stay home to watch movies, read, or blog here a bit. Usually depends on the weather. I was hiking at a state park this last weekend to prepare for a big hike when I fly out to Colorado this weekend to do some more hike/camping with a friend.

Usually on Friday nights I'm exhausted, and I go to bed early. My 18 year old self would like to kick my butt for being this lame.
I usually do my long runs at daybreak on Saturday. Depending on my goals and running schedule, my long run is somewhere between 9 and 20 miles. Sometimes I still have energy for some kind of project work, but usually I just read or watch hulu. I love taking a nap on Saturday afternoon. In the evening, GF and I will make some kind of dinner together, often times trying a new recipe.
On Sundays I usually go for a 30 to 45 minute recovery run in the morning. Then, I do project work, which often times includes research. I make my lunch for the week on Sunday evenings.
I dislike Monday morning conversations: what did you do you this weekend?? Mainly because my weekends are usually this exact same thing which most people find boring. What I do enjoy is talking to the mechanics about where I am stuck on a project or detail what I did to see if it was a best path.

In the summers, we go to the cabin a lot. We're extremely fortunate that my parents have a great place on a lake only about 1.5 hours away. So besides the gas, we spend no money for a relaxing weekend of sitting on the beach, swimming, playing badminton, drinking, shooting the shit, playing 500, and sitting around the fire at night.
In the winter my our (me and hubby's) typical schedule would be: Wake up late (past noon for sure), slowwwly get ready/drink coffee/read the paper, run errands or do some household stuff, get ready to go out or have people over.
"Having people over" is our standard frugal winter activity. Our friends come over, the more the merrier, crowd around in our kitchen nook, drink, talk, maybe play some games. (Taboo and the Game of Things are favorites). Everyone brings something so our expenses are some cheap liquor/beer and maybe some chips or microwave popcorn to snack on. Eventually we might head to a bar (our neighborhood has plenty of casual cheap divey bars) and hang out for awhile...a 2:30 a.m. bedtime is the norm.
I am curious to see how all this will change this winter since I'm pregnant...am already mourning the end of my partying lifestyle, at least for the next 8 months or so!

The Game of Things is a favorite at our place too...always seems to end up getting pretty dirty :)
My weekend schedule changes by season. Right now during the university's school year, I'm spending most Friday and Saturday nights delivering pizza, then Sunday is a late sleep and maybe even a nap in the afternoon (basically a recovery day), followed by baking bread for the week and planning cross country workouts. Lots more free time in summer though, which I try to fill with camping, canoeing, tinkering in the garage.

I'm boring: gardening, computer, fishing, auto racing (definitely not an ERE approved activity!), TV.

Fishing, hiking, yard work and, on those special Saturdays in Autumn, watch the Ohio State Buckeyes. I also do something very few of my peers do----I attend mass with my wife.

I often catch up on reading the blogs I find interesting. Frequently I make semi-annoying posts to threads that others have long stopped responding to...

@djc - I wish I could get my husband to attend Mass with me. I really wish I could get him to watch football with me.

Only the weather matters - that decides whether to go in the pool.
Saturdays I usually work. Then just relax @ home and make drinks and bbq maybe.
Sundays - make pancakes for breakfast and clean up, try to get rid of more junk.
Any day of the week is pretty much the same - read, read online, check emails, clean, check investments, drink, drink. Occasionally walk the dog or something.
Go to Costco from time to time for food supplies

I have been working on the weekend for the entire month of August. :(
But usually I play a couple hours of tennis on Saturday AM, get a good urban hike in, watch a movie, see a friend, bask in the sun in Central Park, etc.

*bump*
I just had a great weekend, executed pretty closely to above but skewed to the extroverted side. I ran with a friend Saturday morning, and we hosted an "orphan" Easter dinner Sunday afternoon.

Interesting question:
Saturday-sleep in till around 0800. Get up and make coffee and read the newspapers online while eating a light breakfast and drinking coffee. I usually end up spending around two hours dreaming and looking for land/cabins in Alaska while yelling across the room for my wife to "come and look at this one!" Next, I try to do something with my wife like taking a trip to the farmers market or taking our dog to the dog park and watching her run and play with the other crazies. After this I usually begrudginly go do whatever shopping my wife needs/wants to do such as groceries/etc. In the evening we'll usually have a couple drinks while cooking on the grill and with something from our freezer like caribou burgers or grilled salmon (yes we're Alaska folks!) Next we'll sit down to dinner together and watch a movie and just enjoy hanging at home for the night. I really hate "going out" at this point on the weekend. With a busy work schedule, free time is precious. Sundays are usually for homework (Me-Masters, Wife-Bachelors) and doing various chores around the house like mowing the lawn and cleaning up a bit. Yes we're heathens and don't go to church:) When I get to sunday night, I wonder how two days can possibly go by that fast and despise the fact that tomorrow is monday already. I can't wait to ER!

I usually do low-cost or free activities.
Examples include sleeping in, which is one of my favorites. I typically do a lot of online gaming on my PS3--Call of Duty. I like to visit the beach and/or the pool. I watch movies, relax, try to eat better than I do during the week.
