Smelly Swiss Dilettante
Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
Sleep well hun, sounds very cosy. If you're minded to do share a photo...
Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
Thank you, i slept well, but chamois aren't there. I took a few pictures of my shelter, i'll post them later. I will try to wait an hour for chamois to show up, but the wind is strong and cools me a bit too much. Then i'll try an other spot in a direction where i saw 15 chamois saturday. But i can't go all the way there, because it was on the other side of the canton border. I just need a way to be sure of where the border is, because hunting on the wrong side would be poaching.
Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
Hey Jean, you can turn off recommendations. I have and I can only watch about 4 shorts in a row before it tells me it has nothing else to show me. Presumably to annoy me enough that I will turn it on, hehe. Turn the bug into a feature.
Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
I've recently started making sausages and I love it. I have a meat grinder and a sausage stuffer. It's very helpful to have both but you can find alternatives, depending on what your desires are!
It's comforting to know exactly what is in my sausages!

Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
Does sausage making has a preserving function? I think it does, I seem to remember sausages hanging about at my granny's ouwith a fridge, cured and they would last a long time.
I wonder if it makes sense to make plant based sausages.

Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
If you preserve the contents, yes. I make fresh sausages and smoked sausages. The smoking helps preserve the meat.

True, there’s the fresh ones as well. I will pass as plenty easier ways to preserve plant foods, but always curious about other people’s efforts in the lab that is broadly taken kitchen.
As children, my mum and her siblings would always get tiny versions of sausages every time their uncle had killed a pig, so sweet.

Nice that my journal's first hijacking was about sausage making
I started working out yesterday. I'm doing the Lafay methode.
I'm targetting a mode 8 at level 4 for those who know of it.
It means about 48 Dips over 3 minutes, 48 pull ups over 3 minutes, 2 different kind of push ups, one legged squats, all at full range.
This is the goal, so right now, I'm way bellow it
I try to treat it as my main job until I reach this goal, to see if it is more interesting than when treated as a side thing.
The real goal is of course to stay healthy in my fourties and beyond. I have been gifted with a very functional body, and while i could be interesting to see how late it would start failling without any kind of care, I'de probably be happier with a healthy body than with this knowledge

@Jean Great to hear you started to work out. I’m not sure how often you’re planning to train, but be cautious about injuries, especially if you’re treating this as a serious commitment. High training volume can quickly lead to issues like elbow tendonitis or shoulder impingement, which might sideline you for a long time. Better to ease into it than risk overtraining!
Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
Sessions are about one hour.
I'll do three sessions a week on average.
Some weeks will have four, some wil have two.
In some months, I'll go down to two.

Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
I'll go to a concert monday (master boot record).
It's quite far away, so I decided tu turn it into a trip. I'll bike there, starting today. It's about 140km, so over 4 day. I kinda could walk that. Actually, I'm still hesitating with walking, because I usually enjoy walking more than biking, but biking will leave me more time to read and sleep. Also, while biking, it's not really an issue to carry 4 books with me. Also, with the bike, I'll be able to go home quickly if I want to, or just turn it into a bigger tour.

Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
There are alternatives, at least in the US. Get a kindle or similar e-reader. If the battery is good, you don't even have to worry about that for a 1 week trip. Alternatively, get your reading material from Little Free Libraries. I used to bring a literal bag of books on every trip, but now I just pick them up from LFLs along the way and use the kindle as a backup.
Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
I should get a kindle at some point.
The books people deposit in free library usually kinda suck.
Until now the bike trip is nice.
Having more than enough time is actually very enjoyable.
Also, i'm thinking about my fleet in elite dangerous again

Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
To share my experience, my kindle paperwhite was a great purchase. I use Calibre to load it with e-books. The battery is good for a week of reading. Having lots of books means I can switch books to match my mood. Ideal for travel. I upgrade my Kindle every few years and the old one sells easily.
It's also possible to read books on my mobile phone. The mobile's screen is small, it doesn't work in the sun, I'm easily distracted, and battery life is not even close to a kindle.
Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
I arrived in the city where the concert will take place, but it's too cold outside, so I wait at the mcdonalds
The bike tour was realky great, but i was lucky with the weather.
It will rain tomorow, i will try to bike home over two days.
I will see how it goes.
I forgot the stuff i need to turn my poncho into a shelter, so I'll have to look for shelter. I already spoted shelter for tonight. For tomorow, in last resort, there are rural train stations.
I will see how less fun bike tour is with rain. This will help me plan future bike tours.
I must say that i live in a quite vista dense area. I took a lot of great pictures.
I think next visit to in laws might be done by bike.
It wont impress them though, they biked a lot, with kids in carriage and all

Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
I shot 1 mallard. I had to go into the water to retrieve it. I only felt the cold afterward. That was great.
Now i know that i will go into the cold water if my duck is in it. So I don't have to worry about my target falling into the water.
I still have to worry about what's behind my target tough.

Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
My girlfriend would like me to make more money. And she thinks I might have some traumatic experience with job applications.
I might, but to me, it's a feature, not a bug, if you do something hundreds of time and only get rejections, still willing to do it would be insane.
But are there any kind of counsillor that analyse career faillures ?
Or is there someone here, who has been recruiting for a company who could take some time with me to tell me which red flags I should hide to recruiters?
I tried to apply to a handicaped care home.
They found someone else for the fixed hour nightshifts, but they might have no other option than me for the irregular nightshifts (this looks terrible, you need to step in for night shifts when someone is missing).

Re: Smelly Swiss Dilettante
I have been on the receiving side of the last minute night shift covers. If Switzerland care industry is anything like UK, the manager will be kissing your feet that you have shown up because otherwise they or some day staff would have to cover the shift, somehow trying to comply with labour law (and sometimes failing); and you will be able to get away with watching movies or playing games most of the night.
However, be mindful of cost to employer and cancellation policy. If you cost more than regular shifts then the manager might be pressured to book you and then keep on looking for cheaper alternative and cancel your shift when that is found.
More generally on jobs, I notice there are now 'return to work' programmes offered by large white collar companies and I think you could tailor your applications as returning to work after your PhD attempt episode.
ETA:
As I told you when we last met, in my view for some and maybe majority of job applications I would recommend you hide your smarts, or wit, or however you prefer to call it, a bit.
Also, is there a massive difference between job market in German speaking vs French speaking Switzerland?

Have you considered your creativity, intelligence and convention blindness might confuse common employee HR filters?
Do you actually want to silence any of these wonderful characteristics of yours?
You have clearly tried to get your foot in the door through the corners with hardly existing HR filters. This should probably work as a strategy with some perseverance.
Another one would be quite the opposite. How strongly have you considered generating income in a way these talents might be perceived as talents rather than handicaps? Like guiding people unhappy in the rat race through nature, prostituting yourself to the corporate sector in raw workshops that muster creativity, ...? I remember you having thoughts of the first, but not mentioning the second...
