I have started to use the Crystal mineral salt deodorant stick. On some days, the stick does not work as well as I need it to. Is there anyway to make a mineral salt deodorant stick work better? I use it right after I take a shower, and I put water on the deodorant stick before I apply the deodorant.
If there is no way to make the mineral salt deodorant stick work better, then are there any other inexpensive deodorant alternatives?
Thanks.

Baking soda works really well. I apply it with a makeup brush. If it's too harsh for your skin, you can mix it with corn starch.

Really rub that salt pretty vigorously and make sure there is some water present... I keep one in my desk at work too and apply it after walks, bike rides.

Apply a real deodorant :-). I use the stick in the morning before I go to work, but if I expect any physical exertion or high temperatures, I know the stick will not be effective. So the best advice is to recognize the limitations of the stick and use the right tool for the job, as circumstances dictate.

@nico33 wet the stick thoroughly before applying. Let me know if that works, it's a trick my ex taught me and works great from my end!

I rub it on with wet (hairy) armpits. If my armpits are dry, I need to dribble some water on the deodorant stick.
(To clarify, I'm just saying that someone with hairless armpits might have to provide additional moisture to get more alum off of the stick.)

Witch hazel. I add a couple drops of rosemary essential oil.

Are you people honestly saying that you use cheaper alternatives for antiperspirant and deodorant? That seems way too extreme to be practical (at least to me.) I buy a stick of Old Spice deodorant for about $2 or $2.50 -- and it lasts 2 or 3 months. I think it is well worth it. There are probably cheaper generic brands too. Personally, I would not go to that extreme of a measure (saving maybe $1 per month?) at the social cost of offending everybody around me with my body odor.

@Chicago81: I used to go through a $3.00 stick of deodorant a month throughout college, and it didn't tend to last throughout the day entirely. Since switching to Crystal deodorant, I'm still using my first stick, which I've been using for about six months now, and if my usage rate continues, I should get another year and one-half out of it. Unlike the traditional deodorant I'd used, this actually works for an entire day - two days if I am pinched for work and am on the run.
Overall, a lifetime supply of the Crystal deodorant, bought in bulk, would cost less than a four-year supply of my old staple, takes up a lot less space, and is shelf-stable. I'm extremely pleased with the deodorant.

The primary reason I started using it was because I was tired of buying new shirts because of the underarm deodorant residue buildup.

I also use Old Spice deodorant. I've been on the same stick for about a year. They can last really long if you make an effort.
