Wouldn't a city with temperate weather (around L.A., for example) be ideal? I seem to remember reading that 30% of produced energy goes into heating and cooling; live in a moderate climate, and you cut a lot of heating and a/c bills.
That being said, L.A. itself wouldn't be ideal, but further out (San Luis Obispo or Bakersfield) would work, wouldn't it?

I took the liberty of adding Troy to the wiki list of places to live. I think that Troy has possibilities, particularly in the tri-city area with Albany and Schenectady.

Thanks! There is a lot to do in the tri-cities area. What recommends Troy more is you can have chickens in the city (not in Albany), and the regional train station is close by. Troy is also more artsy and funky. The availability of all sorts of housing is good in the whole region. Water is abundant. And there are navigable waterways.
