Didn't someone say.."God made a few perfect heads, rest he covered with hair"...I am well on my way to achieving perfection
I mean if Ronaldo (soccer) can do without hair..so can I.
I cut my hair with a 10 yr old clipper....gf helps shave the neck and get a straight line in the back...she has low maintenance style and I cut it..easy as pie..just have a steady hand and don't be nervous

Have a hairdresser cut it really short once a year, then try and cut it myself and sometimes have someone else cut it and see how long I can avoid the hairdresser. This year was the longest - one year. As an aside I worked in a job once where we weren't allowed to wear sports shoes - no matter how clean they are. I ended up buying a cheap pair of slippers, they were so cheap, comfortable and noone realised.
I've been buzzing my own hair since I was a freshman in college. I'm only on my second $10 set of clippers after 15 years, so that's just over $1/year on haircuts.
Actually, I had a small business of cutting my friends' hair in college for 2 beers/cut, so I believe I'm net positive. Turns out I was on my way to ERE long before I'd ever heard of it!

I'm a woman who keeps long hair. A second vote for the person with the link for cutting women's hair in a layered way. It works great!
To cut my hair, I brush the long hair carefully out over my head, grab it and chop. I've got long hair and must cut it off to my waist periodically about a foot at a time. It grows past the tips of my fingers until I start to sit on it, forcing attention.
Like to keep my hair waist-length, because when it gets hot I can tie it in a bun. If you've got waist-length hair, here's how to twist a bun that stays with no pins: twist, tie in a knot, keep twisting the rest and wrap the rest around the root of the knot another time underneath the knot. Try the wrap different times in both directions - one direction will stay tighter than the other. Once you're around, then poke the underneath loop through the first top loop of the knot. It stays tight for quite a long time, longer if you get it wet after making it - which acts as a nice air-conditioner too.

I grew my hair out for 5 years so I wouldn't have to pay anyone to cut it (female). I did use the layering technique described above. I agree, works great, although I feel like it makes it harder to make buns than with one length hair. For the last year I've kept my head shaved with buzzers, which I can do myself. As it's slowly getting longer, my boyfriend and I are experimenting with cutting the side shorter than the top. Still pretty easy with buzzers. The last time I put the wrong guard on a took a big chunk out of the side, so I gave myself a mohawk. Oh well, I suppose everyone should have one once in their life. Anything without clippers though, and me and the boyfriend have to try and train each other to learn the haircut we want.
I shaved my head to raise money for someone with cancer (I'm a girl) and loved it and have been buzz cutting my own hair ever since (that was Fall 2009). I do use the longest guard (5/8"?). Granted, you have to be one confident chick to sport this type of haircut but I qualify.
I cannot believe I used to pay $100+ for a haircut at the salon! Man I wish I could have all that money back...live and learn.

I have cut my own hair since 2005. I just use a scissors and comb, and a towel to catch the hair clippings. I then dump the hair clippings in the toilet and flush! Have saved hundreds of dollars over the past 6 years. Have also saved myself from the hassle of going to salons and talking to the stylists (they always want to chat).

At work we have a discount and points card. I just cashed out the points by buying a grooming kit. My wife gave me my first DIY hair cut. the kit cost £6 (free in points) and the haircut has a street value of £5-6.
My wife is happy with it and it and I am too. I'm not up with haircut terminology to describe it. My good catholic mother would call it a skinhead but it's an inch long lol
It took me a year but I am slowly learning!
i normally get my haircut every 2-3 months so.... 4-6 times £6 is £24-£36 saved a year. This is small money but a permanent saving.
Thank you for the confidence guys!

That's awesome your wife is willing to do the cut. It took several years before mine was willing to regularly give me a cut.
And she still won't let me cut hers.
My clipper set has the standard (American?) numbers. So I get a '3' on the sides and a '4' on the top with scissor trimmed front bangs.
according to http://www.hairfinder.com/info/clippercutting2.htm
#0 (no attachment) - 1/100 inch,
• #1 - 1/8 inch,
• #2 - 1/4 inch,
• #3 - 3/8 inch,
• #4 - 1/2 inch,
• #5 and #6 - special tapering attachments
• #7 - 7/8 inch, and
• #8 - 1 inch.

Hi, that's it - it's #4 all over.
Clippers must be the same worldwide then. I always expect units to be different. In the EU everything is metric, UK half and half, US seems to be imperial so I'm always trying to workout units and currencies when talking to friends and family.
I normally get a 3 at the sides and cut with scissors on the top but the uniform length all over suits me fine too, easy to manage etc.
My wife asked me to cut her hair (with scissors lol) but I guess I'll need to watch a few youtube videos first. Can't be that hard.... Can it?.....
I already dye her hair with a home kit and that turns out better than the salon and it's easy.

Usually I just use the clippers at 5/8" all over and then a little of the 3/8" guard along the neckline so those hairs don't stick out funny. A little manual attention to the hairs around the ears too.
I have a weird aversion (unrelated to the money aspect) towards getting my hair cut, so it works out nicely.
