@ HSpencer
I did not read this thread, but I am 100% on your side!
Text Messaging
Pro cellphone: cost
Here's how I do it: cheap cellphone (one that can make calls and send text messages... what more do you need from a phone anyway?).
Pre-paid card = 15 EUR (22 USD) per YEAR.
Pro cellphone: people can call you in case of emergency
Pro cellphone: you can call people in case of emergency
Contra cellphone: people can call you anytime
Contra cellphone: not required for emergencies
I had an emergency once, but didn't brought my cellphone. I went to a cigarette store and payed them 50 cents to call from their landline. Problem solved.
Contra cellphone: people can't call me
But I'm terrible at cellphoning. So terrible that I can't be reached most of the time for the following reasons:
- battery died (again)
- forgot my cellphone
- left it upstairs, while being downstairs
- to late to pick it up
- battery dies during conversation
- ...
So my friends sometimes call my parents if they want to make sure they can reach me.
Contra cellphone: SMS (Texting)
I hate typing text messages. I even wrote one and after writing it half way through, I gave up and called the person. I'm less than 30y old, so it has nothing to do with age.
Contra cellphone: the radiation can't be healthy
Well... I appear to be more contra than pro.
Dumping the cell phone is something I often consider...
Why haven't I done it yet? So people can call me for jobs or for making plans to go out. Still thinking of dropping the cellphone though... I might experiment by not using it for 2 months or so.
