Re: Bullshit Ability as an Honest Signal of Intelligence

Perhaps our definition of BS isn't quite the same. Dissembling to protect someone's dignity isn't a bad thing as long as it doesn't venture too far afield from the truth. And knowing how to frame projects in a positive manner is something that I think is valuable as long as the project is generally...

Re: Bullshit Ability as an Honest Signal of Intelligence

I think it's only possible to BS people for a limited time; people are more astute than they let on. Folks are just averse to confronting a BS'er in order to avoid open conflict.

Re: Incassaforte encore AMA interview

If you had to distill ERE into a simple phrase that encapsulates it's true essence, what would that phrase be? Example: "Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise". What DIY project are you most proud of at the moment? What happened to the mammoth drill press? Wh...

Re: Moderation: Overlap between money and politics

I've been on something of a personal journey around the deep theories that drive money/economics, all of which can end up in politics.  The more abstractly one talks about money the more these topics become tied to policy. The wikipedia definition of Politics: Politics (from Greek: Πολιτικά, politi...

Re: Protecting against dementia

Not sure if it's been mentioned on this thread but those who sleep 6 hour or less a night have an increased risk of dementia. One of the most important functions that occurs during sleep is the increase in cranial fluid and pressure. Those who study the brain and/or sleep believe this increase in fl...

It would seem to me that Venezuela's oil cursed, planned, invest in only one resource caused the failure. Venezuela nationalized the oil industry. Rife with cash that it didn't have before, Venezuela started making all sorts of promises to its population with this oil money. When you nationalize a ...

We do have UBI, for traditional retirees.
Technically that's not UBI. UBI means every adult gets a check regardless of employment status; there's no mean testing. Social Security is for retirees only.

Save your money and build your own chainsaw guide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a47IL_Fxb8E - this is super cheap and easy to build. I've resawn wood but only on a bandsaw or a 10" table saw. Beware of tension spring - use wedges often. Kickback is ugly when the wood suddenly pinches the bla...

Re: Cutting down your own tree?

Professional tree cutters have the equipment to do a control felling. Depending on the girth and height of the tree, they start by cutting the top branches and upper trunk first and use pulleys and ropes to lower the severed upper tree sections to the ground in a controlled fashion. Once they have t...
