Re: Eliminating Facebook from our lives?

I like Facebook.
Through Facebook I learned about Mr. Money Mustache and Early Retirement Extreme. Thank you Facebook!

I don´t understand people who are apparently jealous of their friends on Facebook. I like most of the posts of my friends and do not see that they are bragging about anything.

I ...

Re: Sustainable living but no homesteading?

Thank you all for answering the question. Now i feel calmer about homesteading. It is not something I would enjoy. Doing something all your life only because you fear civilisation break down is not that great.

I will start to built some food reserves as you recommend.

On a second thought I think ...

Sustainable living but no homesteading?

Hello,

I try to implement ERE rules into my lifestyle. Now I think we as a family live quite frugal. Recently however I read the book "Prosper" from this "Peak Prosperity" author Chris Martenson.

He recomends as a future preparation for the after peak oil (and peak resources) world a lifestyle ...

@Riggerjack thanks for this interesting thread!

I can´t believe central banks will rise the rates. How would that be possible without state bancrupcy?

Here in Europe the ECB cannot rise the rates without sending many Eurozone Member States in the insolvency.

I don´t know how it will play out for ...

Re: What aspects of today's society will we be ashamed of in sixty years?

And humans are also still very adaptable. I'm currently making my way through Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and in book 2 (I'm reading the Everyman's Lib edition), it's mentioned how people in short supply of food---which happened on a regular basis---would put their newborns out ...

Re: Responsibility for Parents

I wonder, though, how filial responsibility laws work in Europe since there is a strong safety net in place for things like healthcare. If the society has already assumed responsibility in one way or another for healthcare, for example, what sorts of things are children typically held responsible ...

Re: Responsibility for Parents

I live in Europe and haven't heard of any such law. Maybe this law exists in certain countries?

I know of at least 2 European countries where this is the case. This law is mostly case law (court law) and not written in any form of paragraphs.

It hapens mostly like this:
In country A an ...

Also economists being bad investors is a straw man. Academic economists are certainly worse than professional investors (no surprise), but as long as they retain a sense of humility they're still better than uninformed or misinformed amateurs. The examples you know are the overconfident ones that ...

Re: Responsibility for Parents

In Europe children are obliged by law to pay some money to their parents in case of their bankrupcy or if they have to live on some form of social help. The court decides how much a child should pay. Excemptions are made in case the child has been abused by the parents.

Re: Want to fight climate change? Have fewer children

Having fewer children won´t change anything. Such actions (convincing people not to have children) will not work. Only China like measures would have some effect but they will not be introduced on the global level.

It seems however that population issue will solve itself gradually as nature is ...

Re: Climate Change!

What I find problematic about the Climate Change Discussion is that it is driving our attention(and money) away from the pollution. Most of the people equal now pollution with CO2. However we have more issues with microplastic (and plastic), drinking water (at least in Europe due to extensive ...

FB-eyer, I would advise you to read some books on nutrition-lifestyle. There is a lot of research that depression is actually an outcome of dysfunctional gut microbiome.

best book on general nutrition and lifestyle is Art de Vany´s "Evolutionary Fitness".

Re: ERE indicator

I would keep it simple. I assume you would like to build an index measuring the population on the ERE scale and you would like to find some real data to actually measure it.

Then, for the US I would take.

1. Absolute value of expenses per month per person in US Dollar (or maybe better relative to ...
