Re: Do others Respect you if you don't have a Job and ERE
Not quite the same thing, but whenever anyone would ask me "what do you DO?" (as in, where does your job put you on my social scale), I'd give them a grin and say oh, I'm independently poor. (Like independently wealthy, but not quite as obnoxious.) The responses tended to be either changing the ...

Re: Let's Do It Again.
My net worth now and then aren't very different, about 750K plus real estate. Part of the problem is that this number should have increased to closer to 1M over this time period, instead it's been completely flat. But the big difference is the marriage. Having a partner with a completely different ...

Re: How to avoid being a know-it-all in conversation and avoid providing unsolicited advice?
Get away from those cars! That would basically bring up every resentment toward my parents I ever felt. In a true emergency situation I admit, I'd get away from those cars in a flash. For day to day advice, I'd probably mark you as a self-important contol freak and avoid you like the plague. Gotta ...

Re: Carrying around a small journal & writing utensil wherever I go?
I carry a tiny notebook (5*7 Mead $1.98 at walmart) with me in my backpack in an easily accessible pocket, with the pen tucked into the spiral. I've also constructed a plastic sheath for the front cover that lets me put something inspirational on the outside and my most frequently needed finance ...

Re: Handling street pan-handlers?
I have two strategies. 1. I keep $5 in my pocket per week. The first person who asks, gets it. Let the universe sort out who deserves it or not. 2. Beyond that, I tend to put a card and my driver's license in my pocket when I shop. The answer is both literal and true, "I'm sorry, I have no cash on ...

Re: How to avoid being a know-it-all in conversation and avoid providing unsolicited advice?
I could be wrong here, I'm not known as the most sensitive person on the planet. But what I've observed is that ideas couched in your own experience rather than what other people Should Do are usually better received, although you may get a reputation as self centered. For example: "gosh, I can't ...

Re: Being open about ERE at work/interviews?
Having an FU perspective at work,' I can walk away whenever I want', got me amazingly good results. They knew I could walk away, and they didn't want me to do that. It kept the bs away from my doorstep and actually resulted in in house job offers better than I expected. However, this is something ...

Re: Let's Do It Again.
ETA: you're probably right about MMM being a better compromise, though. If I rely on an MMM lifestyle, is it also ok to RELY on my partner for $50K out of the $60 if things go wrong?

Re: Let's Do It Again.
Oh, I love MMM. Perhaps you're right, the MMM approach is a lot less radical than early retirement EXTREME. I just ... I loved the radical part of it. That yes, I'd be willing to both restructure my life AND give up things that don't fit, mainstream as they might be. I'd be willing to count pennies ...

Let's Do It Again.
My introduction covered most of what this journal is supposed to be about, so I'll just say it's a matter achieving ERE, then losing myself back into mainstream living, understanding why that happened and how to prevent it from happening again, and now, finding my way back to a new version of ERE ...

Let's Do It Again!
American Southwest here, hello!
I'm now in my early 50's and I have had a yo-yo relationship with ERE for a long time. My father was a city boy who had dreams of being independent, living off the land and so on. Never came to fruition but left a big impression on me. While I absorbed that deep ...

Re: IQ Test
134. If 100 is average I'm surprised that there aren't more scores at that level or lower.
Is the scoring biased on the upside or do smarter frustrated people feel an affinity towards FI and ERE.
I belong to several forums about ERE, simple living, FI and similar concepts. Overall I'd say people ...

Re: IQ Test
Ok ... I got to question 39, feeling like I probably got 27 right by intelligence and perhaps another 5 right by good guesses. The darn thing then kicked me back to the first question. My interpretation: I'm a genius, no question, because I decided my time was worth more than the $0 / no joy Mensa ...
