Re: Building a better world - Cam's Journal

Old road bike brakes just don't work that well in my experience--it was the same on my 80s road bike that got converted to a single speed. It was just scary. How the hell did they do mountain descents in the Tour de France back in the day?

Re: Love and DIY [Candide]

I'm enjoying the Meaningness "book" you linked to. I'm not through it all, but I'm very interested to see if it delivers what it promises...a practical solution to philosophical questions. I've been having difficulty working through exactly what he is talking about. ...and what's this I see in the ...

Re: Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar by James Marcus Bach

On the other hand, for those who are FI, the methods are pretty useful for keeping oneself active (at least if you're highly intelligent and have an insatiable curiosity... perhaps these are sufficient but not necessarily necessary??!) beyond the default tropes of travel, concerts, family/children ...

Yeah, that's why I recommended it. Plenty of personal finance/investing books around, but fewer renaissance ideal books.

Because Internet by Gretchen McCulloch

I came across this title through my public library's book recommendation service. They nailed this one. I liked it quite a bit. The subtitle of the book is Understanding the New Rules of Language. *spoilers* The first part of the book is about language, writing, types of internet users, emojis ...

This book fucking slaps. Great recommendation!
No surprise that you would like it. Originally traders and BBQ pit masters, the first buccaneers got tired of being screwed over by Spain, so they decided to live off the (Spanish) economy instead of in the economy. PirateCaptainERE, indeed.

Well, if the purpose of floss is to get stuff out from in between your teeth so damaging bacteria don't grow there, I don't know if letting stuff grow on the floss then putting it up into your gums in following days is what one should be doing. I even buy expensive floss because regular floss gets ...

I just returned the book and didn't feel like doing a complete write-up, but many things in the book seem to come up here. A few: Reputation over credentials Learning one thing making it easier to learn other things Following interests leading to paid work later Multi-disciplined approach Systems ...

Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar by James Marcus Bach

Secrets of a Buccaneer-Scholar by James Marcus Bach is a quick, easy read promoting self-education and wide learning. Less technical than Early Retirement Extreme , less self-helpy than Refuse to Choose , with a lot of his own personal story throughout the book. Could be a good read for the ...

For some reason I thought you were already done with FT employment...maybe it's all the other cool stuff you do. In any case, congratulations on that! I don't miss drinking at all. NA beer serves the purpose when I need the "nostalgia" of cracking one open with a friend. When I paint from white on ...

Congratulations! For us the months after were indeed more impactful in our minds. Having the largest expense gone and seeing the money pile up much quicker made it seem more real than simply sending in the final check.

@J&G Those sound like the two modes I have--my old mode (rage) and the new mode (acceptance) I'm trying to cultivate. I feel like I've sufficiently gotten my rage/resentment out. It's been my whole life. For me it's more a matter of making a decision and living with it. Here's the old plan: 1. Avoid ...

I'm actually curious whether it works the other way around. IOW, does a solid understanding of ERE, in particular the polymathic approach with its understanding of learning curves, etc. carry over to learning something like gaming. So far, I would say yes. I can recognize the learning curve and ...

During the SD discussion we had earlier in the year, berrytwo linked this website related to the book, and it piqued my interest. Then 7wannabe5 mentioned the book in my journal, so it has been top of mind for me. The book is about organizational management from SD level yellow (teal in Laloux's ...

Book Club - Reinventing Organizations by Frederic Laloux

Our MMG took the summer off, so some of us decided to do a book club instead. We are opening it up to the forum at large. We'll meet on Zoom or Discord to discuss the book. The date/time is flexible if someone really wants to do this, but the given time doesn't work. I'll send a link to interested ...

For as long as I can remember, I’ve disliked doing chores. Recently, someone expressed surprise that I still despised household chores so much, despite not having to go to work. It occurred to me that it is a little bit absurd to resent so much the things that simply need to be done. My new approach ...

The games sound very similar. Sim Companies hovers around 28,000 players, and is all about production and retail. Products of varying complexity are produced, in multiple steps and often by multiple players, and eventually sold back to the pretend people that work in the buildings. There is a single ...
