Restaurant dinners with colleagues

What do you do when you get invitated to dinner on expensive restaurants and need to pay yourself? Of course I can't always use the excuse that I'm busy with something else. Do you say straight out that it's too expensive for your budget, or go their and pay 50$ for a dinner? Don't want to tell colleagues about ERE because then they might think I hate working...
