If it wasn't for the employee apartment I would be way higher. Rent would go way up (+500$ minimum) and distance to work too, which would lead to taking the subway regularly.

...but then:
- I do the round trip to work only about once a week, by free public transport plus a few paid bicycle kilometers.
- My wife goes to work on foot or sometimes by bicycle.
- We own our place.

You could use the public transportation multiplier to those miles (0.7), apply the bike multiplier to the bicycle miles, and then divide the entire commute number by five to reflect the once/wk schedule.

Mine is 0 + 25*0.7+0=17.5. I need to start growing some food!

So 5.55. Though if we subtract the rental income we get from renting out one of the spare bedrooms, it becomes 3.55. Which is awesome, but may not be in the spirit of the idea.

0 where I currently live and work (accomodation provided for free on campus so 0 distance to work, groceries are walkable also). The apartment I own is also 0/0 to groceries and work, but I am unsure about any imputed ownership costs. It's an apartment, so the ability to grow one's own food is limited to herbs on the balcony. It does get quite a lot of sun, too, which I've been considering harvesting via solar oven/maybe a small pv set-up - though that's still in the future.

It would be 0 if you live rent-free in a restaurant where you also work (or not) and eat all your meals. Even someone who lives on the street would likely have a non-zero score. Otherwise, it's calculated like this:

Based on this, I propose the following formula for ERE housing score:

Score = (Distance to work in miles) + (Distance to grocery in miles) + (Monthly cost of housing in USD /100)

For those who live in a part of the world that measures distance in kilometers, the conversion factor is 1 km = 0.621 mi. Obviously, a lower score is better. Because various modes of transportation differ in resilience, I suggest the following adjustments based on the primary mode of transportation that is actually used in daily life. This will prevent the ERE housing score from being a static measure, and encourage better behavior.

If you typically ______ to work/grocery, multiply distance by ______.
Walk: 0
Bike: 0.3 (if less than 3 mi, use 0 instead)
Public transit: 0.7
Car: 1.0

It could be argued that for perma-travelers, ongoing relocation costs (from place to place) should be included, since it's likely a non-trivial part of housing costs. In that case, I suggest adding a term with (Average monthly travel cost in USD / 100).
