How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
Mine were not so good. That's ok though, I'm in it for the long haul.
VTSMX 0.31% http://performance.morningstar.com/fund ... ture=en-US
VFFVX -2.83% http://performance.morningstar.com/fund ... ture=en-US
Pension fund about -1%
I know this is not the most scientific way to think about this but I wanted to look at it anyway.

Terrible. Just holding tens of thousands of canadian dollars! Man, I should've been investing

Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
CAGR of negative 7.33%. I added $55,000 during the year. I've been sleeping soundly

Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
In terms of my single best and single worst investments, SBRA was my worst at about -43%. MSFT was the best at about +32%. BBL has quickly turned into my worst for this year at about -47% now. All in HSA.
Overall I think I was about +3% for stocks. LC was +14%.

My net worth went down, so my returns were negative for the year.

Another way to think about it (I didn't come up with this): if you think that the fundamentals of the industries that these stocks represent are good then they are just on sale right now.

@Gilberto
Yes that's right, but I don't have any cash left to invest

As long as your coworkers are walking in with Starbucks lattes, then your SBUX is doing just fine.

Pretty flat overall. Best performer was PCL (a REIT) and worst was IBM. But p2p lending (LC) was steady at 9% and the cash accumulates daily, which is pleasing to watch.
I believe the technical term for this kind of performance is "Meh".

Roughly speaking, down about 2.75%. Too much overseas exposure did me in. Of course they are down more in the first two weeks of 2016.

Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
My stocks, a little bit miserable. -5% or so. A little bit discouraging due to it being my first year investing. Hopefully it will get better this year (at something like -7% right now
).
On the other hand, my other personal investments return has been phenomenal, somewhere between +50% and +75% due to some lucky opportunities in the automotive market and being offered deals I couldn't refuse.
So overall I have to be pretty happy with my luck in 2015.

Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
My investments were down less than 3% for the year, and currently stand pretty much even from when I retired last year. Not bad at all, especially for a down year. I have no complaints.
Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
Down overall a few points. The significant decline in Canadian investments was offset by the fact I don't use currency hedging for my international exposure. The USD/CAD ratio carried the day on that front.

With terrible oil returns, I scrambled to readjust throughout 2015 and closed out at +2.3%. Sitting on about 20% cash.
S&P500 index was -0.7% and yield of 2.2%.

Great question.
Mine were disastrous. My stocks funds overall are around a 10% capital loss since inception. Unfortunately I started investing for the first time ever in June this year. Just before everything started turning to shit. At a peak price. Sigh. Oh well I expect recovery in the long run. I have lots of stash just in interest bearing deposits and accounts so my return overall is probably still positive. Not sure exactly how much though.

Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
Reasonable:
* Real-estate investment: 6% yield (quite stable the last 7 years)
* Mutual funds stock: 4.5% (worldwide coverage has helped)
* Cash, 1.7% (because of CD's)
So, overall, around 4%. My goal is 5-6% annually on average (measured over longer period)
2016 is going to be more shaky, I am afraid, but that might lead to buying moments (using the Cash I have kept)

I did ok in 2015. I had some big wins and some big losses. I'm getting better at hedging. I keep the bulk of our money in Wellington (flat) and PIMCO's Income Fund (+2%) and they keep us afloat.
2016 ... not so much.

Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
I'm down roughly 8%. I started getting in to energy too early. Also, started focusing on emerging markets a lot and they are still down or dead in the water. All of this was a known possibility, as I take more risk than most, and I'm happy to hold all of these for the long run. I will definitely be adding to these positions this year.
Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
Quicken says I'm up 1.17% for the year which seems about right I guess. Essentially a flat year.
One thing I don't understand is that Quicken shows my discretionary trading account as up 4.85% while Fidelity (where I keep it) tells me the return is 2.76%.
1.1% 401K (holds IVV and AGG)
-0.3% After tax (VTSAX Total Stock Mkt, VFWAX Total Int'l, VGSLX REIT Fund)
2.76% After tax trading account (blue-chip dividend stocks plus a muni-bond fund and S&P fund)

Isn't it though? I log in each day just to look and really enjoy seeing it accumulate. I don't know why more people don't get into it I really think its a solid investing platform at this point. Certainly a hedge against what's going on the past few weeks in the markets.Dragline wrote:But p2p lending (LC) was steady at 9% and the cash accumulates daily, which is pleasing to watch.

Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
Depending upon the day I measured it, -1 to -3%. I was actually quite satisfied b/c it closely tracked the 'lazy portfolio' returns I judge myself by. I am consistently performing inline with a globally diversified asset allocation. Consistently getting market returns is better than most investors ever do!
