I used to travel excessively for work (overseas for weeks at a time), and kept a similar log of all the life events I missed with my wife and others. The exercise was definitely revealing of the sacrifice involved with career, and eventually led me to quit that job and start down an ERE path.

On a very related note, Bill Gross just stepped down from PIMCO and transferred to Janus in order to focus less on managerial aspects and more on the pure investing parts of the job.

Maybe it's something in the water there...
