This is a great article written by a guy named Dave Martin about how he, his wife, and 3 kids, were able to spend 7 years circumnavigating the world on their sailboat, and then another 6 exploring the northern latitudes, for a budget of $6500-$15000/year. It's appropriately called "Setting Priorities":

Just reading that is inspiring :). What's also cool is that they're on a break from cruising right now, and they used that time to build their own off-the-grid house on land they bought in Maine.
