I practically never leave home without a backpack. It's just too useful - it always holds umbrella, water, wallet, some book to read, band-aids etc. This could all theoretically go into fanny pack, but, with backpack, you can always carry some groceries in it on your way back home, or clothing if the weather changes (say you need to take off your jacket).

I'm not questioning the utility of a backpack. I was more curious because Jacob talked about a vest with all kinds of other things and linked to the guy with the coat but then mentioned a backpack with a handful of items.

For a weighted pack, regular weighted plates work well too (what I use) and can often be found at Play It Again Sports or similar places for $0.50/lb or less. Before I used a weighted plate, I have also used individual bags of sand, concrete, flour and rice. If the bag is smaller, put clothes, jackets or a sleeping bag at the bottom of your backpack to bring the weight more towards the center.

Some people think of "everyday carry" as all the items they carry every day, not just a firearm.

My full EDC:

-house and car keys
-25 year old leather wallet with two credit cards, id, one debit card, and insurance cards
-pixel 4a
-amazfit band 7
-550 paracord belt my wife made for me

That's all. I used to carry a leatherman charge TTI and a flashlight but I dropped the flashlight when I upgraded to a smartphone and the leatherman kept eating holes in my pockets so I stopped carrying it around. I could carry it around in its case on my belt but I don't use it enough unplanned outside of the home to justify this.

Which one? I currently wear the Suunto Ambit but it has none of the fancy health tracking stuff and the sat locking is intermittent whenever I get near a military base which is about 2/3rds of my workouts.

Suunto 9 Peak (basic). I recently upgraded from a first generation Suunto Spartan. The battery life was 4-5 hours and my long runs were exceeding that. So I sold it and upgraded. The 9 has more than 24 hours of heart rate and GPS tracking on a single charge. You can also pre-load gpx tracks if you are doing backcountry stuff and it will help you stay on track. Spendy, but I use it daily. Bought using REI discount.

Edit: the newer watch company Coros has an excellent reputation and cheaper options. If I would have known about them, I would have likely gotten one of their watches.

edit 2: Seem like Suunto 5 is still being made and has a long running reputation, is much cheaper than the 9, and still has some of the newer features.

Thanks. Will check out Coros. I have never heard of them and would have overlooked one if I had seen it at the swap.

My standard "walking around" outfit is kinda expensive. GORUCK GR2 (I hemmed and hawed for half a decade and finally bought one a couple of years ago, no regrets! I paid $250 or something on eBay) and eventually added a 30lbs plate in the laptop compartment (much better than hauling dumbbells around because a plate sits higher on the back, also no regrets, way better for posture).
@jacob: do you have the 40l version or the smaller one of the gr2? And would you think the 40l one would be too big for someone under 6’ tall? Also, would you still recommend the gr2? I have a smaller backpack, an old Gregory hiking pack, that I use for rucking around the neighborhood for cardio with some barbell iron plates in it. But I’d like a good forever backpack for travel, work and recreational.

The 40L GR is enormous. 40L backpacks are too big for day to day activities generally, unless you are like 6'6" 250+. And another side note, I think GoRuck has gotten excessively overpriced, even for the high quality it has. Also, they require you to build your own organization system inside the backpack, despite the exorbiant price. Also no water bottle holder, which is a horrific choice IMO. You can add one via the webbing, but it kinda ruins the whole visual appeal of the backpack. These were deal breakers for me, and so I returned it. I'm not a rucker though.

You can get basically the same quality for half the price from someone like Topo Designs global traveler (I have the 40L for travelling and its still huge, but I lived out of a 26L for 6 months bumming around Europe, so maybe i'm just a weirdo), the backpack looks less military than the gr2, and has all the niceties for a travel bag when you want to use it that way (or use it for a daily carry). The 30L would probably be a top notch all arounder. I would excessively highly recommend my 26L bag from tom bihn as well, but it was discontinued a long time ago.

I have the 34L GR2. I'm 6'2.9" according to the latest measurement. Methinks 40L, which is just under the dimensions of a carry-on roller, would be a bit big as a daily backpack. And that from someone who ran around with a 45L backpack on campus. The GoRuck stays boxy even when empty. I bought a 30lbs plate (this one, I think https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07PLP7BYL/) and the back panel fits it perfectly as if it was designed for it---which in some sense it was. The inside still has a sleeve for a laptop. (So if you're not hauling a plate, you can haul TWO laptops in a very protected fashion.)

The 34L also has some internal organization pockets. This was annoying until I locked in an organizing design. Now it has the benefit of knowing where everything is blindfolded. I can put the backpack behind the car seat and extract whatever I need from it by groping for the right zippers behind me---also great in the dark while on camping trips. On the flip side, these pockets do take away from the space for bringing clothes. Compared to my airline travel bag, a Red Oxx Air Boss, which I did a 3 week trip to Yurop with, the Goruck is good for 3-4 days w/o laundry (e.g. extra pair of pants, 3 shirts, 5 sets of socks and underwear). IOW, as a travel bag, you better be a hardcore minimalist who enjoys handwashing clothes daily :) On the flip side, hauling 25lbs in the Air Boss is no joy!

The three potential downsides are that 1) the backpack itself weighs 4.5lbs, which is a big chunk out of the 26lbs carry-on weight limit if you want to fly around with it; 2) the back panel ventilation sucks. It is practically non-existent so expect a very sweaty/soaked back insofar you're in a sweaty environment; 3) The pack is bloody expensive. Close to $500 new now and not even made domestically anymore... I paid $275 or so used. It would be quite painful to have it stolen or lost.

For 10 years I've owned a 26L GR1 and I love it. In the early days I was doing a lot of training/fitness with it but now I just use it as my everyday backpack. I bring it to work and on every trip. I'm <6' tall and 26L is as large as I would go for an everyday backpack. I agree with pretty much everything Jacob and Slevin have said. For me, it's still small enough to fit under the seat on a commercial flight so it counts as a personal item. That means I can still carry on a duffel bag if I need to bring more stuff for a trip. In summer months you can get away with a weekend trip using just the backpack depending on how much you have to bring.

FWIW, I did just buy a much larger Mystery Ranch Terraframe 65. If you plan on doing serious backpacking or carrying more than ~40lbs, I would recommend a pack with an external frame. The external frame reduces back sweat/chafing and also allows you to distribute the weight over more of your body than a pack without a frame. But I would never use the Mystery Ranch for daily tasks or non-outdoors traveling because it is huge and conspicuous.

I got the GR2 40L recently-ish. I use it multiple times a week. Mostly for grocery shopping which I do exclusive on foot. In general I use the bag for carrying various stuff on foot or bike. The 40L is great for that. I don't fear that I won't have space for the things I pick up (I do still pack a compact tote I can whip out just in case). I'm aware that wine bottles are not the most widely used unit for measuring bag volume, but it easily carries 10 bottles both in regards to volume (I could probably have fitted 15 and that's just in the main compartment IIRC) and weight (it doesn't feel like the bag is bursting and I need to be careful).

I have also used it as carry-on for which it has just the right dimensions - although as Jacob mentions - the start-out weight is pretty high so it's easy to go past weight restrictions if you are not careful. When I was away for two weeks it carried everything I needed. Whether it will carry everything you need will depend greatly on your laundry strategy and what stuff you need to bring besides clothes. I like the clam shell design that makes everything easily accessible. The big empty main compartment combined with packing cubes works great for keeping stuff organized.

Personally I don't find that the GR2 40L look enormous but I suppose there is some lower limit to how short your torso can be before the bag starts hitting your bum. The only difference between the 40L and 34L is 1.5" in height AFAIK. TBH I think I would also have been fine with the 34L in (almost?) all situations. I want to join the overpriced-choir but I still couldn't find a better alternative for my needs in a do-it-all bag. I don't particular fancy the military look but you can also get some versions without the webbing which makes it look more plain.

Seems exactly what I’m looking for and I don’t mind spending $$$ for quality and for American made; but if it’s not made here anymore I don’t understand the price.

Ah, thanks! I don’t think that price is crazy assuming this is in fact not a disposable product and is in fact “the” bag.

Yes. Incidentally, I don't think the GR screams tacticool/mall ninja. The slant back pocket does give you away to "those in the know"---kinda like other watch nerds recognizing an understated luxury watch.

Add: However, if you intend to use it for work/school, keep in mind that the GR2/34L isn't exactly very good for carrying paper, binders, or books due to the internal organization. You can and I do but you only have about 8" of vertical space before the top internal organizer pockets, so paper/etc. has to be carried sideways/upside-down/spine to spine/... It is definitely not a book bag.

I've found the weight of a backpack to have more impact than originally thought and to somewhat limit the range of what you can do with it.

If you intend to use it as your only carry-on baggage, and especially for hiking, this is something I'd take seriously into consideration.

Who am I kidding; I’ll just stick with what I’ve got already. Which ain’t nothing. In addition to the previously mentioned hiking pack, a 20+ year old Gregory impulse that is still going strong, and a beautiful leather messenger style briefcase I inherited from my dad when he retired, which is in fact my EDC, and a bunch of cheap free swag backpacks that often come in handy for various things, I’ve got the large sackville bike basket bag that I no longer use much for my wald bike basket, but that is a great weekender bag. https://www.rivbike.com/products/sackvi ... arge-olive

But that GoRuck bag is very nice
