"Easier said than done"

https://www.servicespace.org/blog/view.php?id=10166

And their blog link is http://greenlocal.org/

"“Everywhere we turn, people are led by some kind of insecurity, which is the biggest hindrance that they’re facing to do what they really want to do in their lives. Accepting that life is insecure anyway, that there is no real security any way you look at it, this is what did it for us. We used to be on a linear path, wanting to get from point A to point B, only creating a new point C once we reached B. The third stage in my life started when I realized life is not linear, it’s a circle. We drew a circle, sat in the middle, and said, ‘I don’t want to go anywhere. I’m done with ambitions. And we put all our values within this circle and let’s see what happens.’ The journey here is inward. So that is the luxury of freedom and how we arrived at it.”

Another snippet from the above link

“For me, true wealth, if it has to be in an external form, are the trees above the ground and the water under the ground. This truth has become deeply internalized. I can’t change it now and I haven’t looked at my bank balance for more than 8 months now.”

Found this on reddit-like site in HS (without fancy music and photos). Then I read some summary/excerpts of his life... Funny.

Just reminded some quotes of this speech today, found the video.

As I investigate ERE Elite, I was impressed some folks from here come into contact with such Gods :o  (yep, I still can't believe I interact with people 1-3x my age from around the world).

It could be posted here before.

EDIT: In this moment I'm buying 5kg baking soda, because of its multi properties. So much system thinking

I recently watched Free Solo, the documentary about Alex Honnold's free solo of El Capitan. Highly recommended, it was outstanding. It's available online as well as select theaters.

"People talk about trying to suppress your fears, I look at it a different way. I try to expand my comfort zone, practicing moves over and over again. I work through the fear until it's just not scary anymore." -Honnold.

I finally got a chance to watch Free Solo about Honnold's climb of El Cap. Definitely worth watching.

Three Q's ... First, is it me or does his girlfriend get up in his head in all the wrong ways? Second, I couldn't get over the size of his hands. Is that common amongst climbers? And third, what was with the furries he stumbled across on the climb?

I just watched that last night. I was left wishing that the documentary was better made. The climbing parts were great, even though it seems the crew didn't get to film it in ways they had been planning.

Yeah, the girlfriend seemed to be always trying to get him to quit. At one point in the documentary I said out loud "hey, toots, you know what you signed up for". Maybe it was just edited that way to make her that character, but yeah..

Yes, his hands and especially fingers are freakishly huge. It's hard to tell/notice how big they are unless when next to something comparable. They stood out more to me when he was on podcasts and stuff and was sitting at a table and holding things. His feet are also big and his toes are extremely long. He (and climbers like him) have incredible hand strength. Getting strong hands doesn't always make them large, so I don't know whether his hands are that large naturally or if they got bigger from him making them so strong. Not all climbers have huge hands, most are probably normal looking.

As for the furries: kids these days. And, Yosemite is in California.

https://phys.org/news/2019-04-dutchman- ... c-car.html

A Dutchman completed an epic 95,000 kilometre (59,000 mile) journey by electric car in Sydney Sunday in a bid to prove the viability of such vehicles in tackling climate change.

Wiebe Wakker drove his retrofitted station wagon nicknamed "The Blue Bandit" across 33 countries in what he said was the world's longest-ever journey by electric car.

The trip from the Netherlands to Australia took just over three years and was funded by public donations from around the world, including electricity to charge the Bandit, food and a place to sleep.

From his website: https://plugmeinproject.com/

Plug Me In is a purpose-driven adventure with the aim to inspire, educate
and accelerate the transition to a zero carbon future.

On the 15th of March 2016 I left the Netherlands in an electric car, the Blue Bandit,
with Sydney as my destination on the other side of the world.

I travel without money and rely on the kindness of people.
Plug Me In is based upon the collaboration between people. Anyone can contribute.
On this website you can support me by offering a meal, a place to sleep or electricity for the car.
All the offers determine the route to Sydney.

I wonder what will happen when he returns to the temptations and stresses of "normal" life in our affluent society? If he added a pound to his pack for every pound that he lost along the way, maybe he would be pretty buff by the end too?

I am considering attempting my survival through foraging plan again and living primarily off the virtual back-pack full of butter I have slung below my waist for a month or two. My numbers are still very good, but I am becoming scared straight by my mother's upcoming double-hip replacement.

Alex Honnold isn't you're typical free solo climber - he's near the apex of soloists. I knew a free soloist and his hands weren't fat like Honnold's hands but then again he wasn't climbing as frequently, his ascents were of shorter duration, and his climbing choices weren't as technically difficult as what Honnold and others in his skill set are doing. Most elite free soloist will have large fingers because of the stress and strength requirements - they're carrying their weight just on their fingers and toes for 6 to 8 hours a day. And not only do they use their fingers for support, they also will wedge their fingers and hands into crevices so they can "relax" and let their muscles rests for short periods; this causes you to build up fat and callouses to protect your fingers and joints as well as increasing the size of the muscles and tendons in the fingers - and the finger bones also get denser.

This has been a test of the emergency trivia system, if this had been a real information emergency, directions towards a pertinent thread would have been given. We now resume the regularly scheduled discussion.

Alastair has a new podcast:

He is one of the unicorns who have managed to make a living being an "adventurer" and he strikes me as a genuinely nice guy.
