I remembered about this blog last night and haven't seen it linked here yet. I like the breakdown of phases of adventures in different vehicles and boats. A great reminder that kids don't need to slow you down:

Henry Rollins has a cool story with some ERE threads woven into his story. He went from working at an ice cream shop to lead singer of one of his favorite bands. He continued evolving into writing, publishing, acting, and spoken word/stand up. Humility, passion, and drive are the foundation of his success.

"Great Wide Open is a series of 6 short films, directed by Jared Leto, that celebrates America's National Parks and the incredible adventurers who explore them."

I watched the first five episodes today. I don't think he's released the sixth yet. Cool series and I recommend the whole thing. Episode 5 is particularly relevant to this thread:

@Ego

Geez this guy is not only yoked (arms bigger than my legs), he is also in the top 0.01% of fitness....
Ryan Hall is no stranger to speed. As the fastest marathon runner in U.S. history and first U.S. runner to run a sub-one hour half marathon, Ryan is used to long – and high-intensity – runs.
Other videos in that channel includes one guy attempting 7800 pull-ups in 24 hours. I had no idea there was people attempting these sort of feats I would've just deemed impossible from the start...Good Lord.

Fourteen Peaks: Nothing is Impossible

With an ego the size of Texas and a chip on his shoulder the size of Mount Everest, Nepali Mountaineer Nimsdai Purja sets out to stand atop all fourteen 8K+ meter mountains in the world in record time. The previous fastest to completion was 7 years. Purja attempted it in 7 months.

Purja is quite a character. He was the first Gurka to become a member of the UK's Special Boat Service before taking up mountaineering. I like the fact that the film did not try to portray him as loveable. My guess is if he were born today in the US he would be Ritalined into a compliant, comatose little bugger.

@Ego-That project was insane and extremely impressive. Just the one 48 hr stretch where he climbed Everest, Lhotse and Makalu is mind blowing but that's like 2 min of the film.

He's definitely toying with death. It's admirable that he's willing to help other climbers but rule number 1 in emergency med is not to add any more casualties. He's very skilled, but certainly has gotten very lucky.

Ego the size of Texas may be an understatement.

I saw 14 peaks over the weekend and have seen a couple interviews with Nims yesterday. Really wild vision and story.

I watched The Alpinist last night (currently on Netflix). It follows the story of Marc-Andre Leclerc. His mom proactively homeschooled him and encouraged a different path because she didn't want to turn him into a comatose little bugger. A pretty unbelievable story following a young man living life on his own terms and following his passion.

@theanimal, I agree. He is toying with death.

Doing any one of those climbs is logistically challenging. At least in the beginning he didn't have a ton of money to throw at the problem. I wonder how he made it happen. Getting the gear, visas, staff and permits for three very different countries to line up and overlap must have been crazy hard.

It will be interesting to see how well he transitions from doing these things for himself to doing them for paying customers.

@WRC, thanks for the recommendation!

Cody Townsend - 50 Classic Ski Descents Project - He is almost there!

This is a very realistic portrayal of back country skiing... mainly that it is mostly time spent going uphill, it kinda sucks a lot when the weather/snow/stoke conditions are are not perfect...so you either trudge on or turn around. Do or do not. They discuss their BC decision making a lot which is nearly never done in ski videos that focus on POW! shots. It also shows various levels of deep fatigue for not training properly to do back to back to back adventures. Lastly, it shows that the adventure camera person is usually the most badass person on the crew at any given time.

Biking Borders is a DIY documentary that follows two friends who try to cycle from Germany to Beijing to raise funds to build a school in Guatemala. The scenery through Turkey, Iran, and Central Asia was spectacular:

I'm absolutely loving reading this topic. There are so many cool links to others going on adventures, some still going 8 years later. I'm delighted to see it.

I just discovered the Dirtbag Diaries a few weeks ago. I've been listening to a couple episodes every day. Basically ten years of awesome adventures and compelling stories. Here are a couple as a sample:

"Today, we’re headed to Laos to recount the story of two friends and one spectacularly bad idea. Join us as we follow Jacob Bain, Colin Brynn and a bamboo raft down a river at the edge of the world. Sometimes, bad ideas work out for the better. Sometimes."

https://dirtbagdiaries.com/brief-moment ... ful-place/ - or a photo enhanced version which I didn't see yet: https://vimeo.com/112545690

"Big Dreams require big commitment. We may not all dream on the same scale and commitment levels, but we all share dreams. They pull us through our lives on solid ground. Today writer and climber Sarah Garlick presents: The Dreamers—reflections from four generations of the world’s best climbers: Steve House, Henry Barber, Steve Schneider, and Colin Haley. In the process Sarah found out a little bit about herself. Do you have a life long dream? What if you completed it? What if you never realized it?"

https://dirtbagdiaries.com/dreamers/

I enjoyed this episode because it explores the concept of the vision or dream of the next big adventure from a few different perspectives. It touches on the paradox of choice and opportunity cost when chasing dreams. It felt fitting as I sit in frigid temperatures, surrounded by snow and ice, thinking about spring and summer adventures.
