Just for an introduction, I am an industrial design student in Australia hoping to get into an ERE type job in the future.
As an industrial design student, normally I would probably have a career designing consumer products (think apple computer products as the obvious example of 'industrial design'). In fact, I originally entered my degree to pursue automotive design until I came across these ERE ideas on the internet.
I have freedom to choose what my next design project is so I was hoping to do something that can encourage ERE behaviours.
A common project among students that I've seen is the idea of traditional products with sustainable materials and production, energy sources and so forth, such as bikes, furniture etc. However, many of these types of projects seem somewhat limited and narrow in terms of ERE goals.
I'm more interested in possibly moving away from today's mass production culture altogether. Making things using local materials for local consumption instead of relying on centralized manufacturing and shipping products halfway around the globe. The potential of things like 3d printing to do away with some forms of manufacturing completely. The other 'modular appliances' thread was interesting as well.
I am having trouble deciding what area my project should focuse that can also be packaged into a feasible design project. Any ideas? Thanks!
