Gwen aka Sharky introducing himself

Post by Sharky »

Hi,

I’m new to the forum, so I’m posting a short introduction.

I’m looking for ways to become as independent of government spending as possible, and I’d like to exchange ideas with like-minded people to find best practices.

I’m also interested in reflecting on individualism versus collectivism, which seems appropriate if you aim to be independent. Accordingly, I’m drawn to books such as The Ancient City by Fustel de Coulanges and Inventing the Individual by Larry Siedentop.

I enjoy pondering these deep questions while hiking in the mountains and spending quality time thinking about the state of the world, drinking mulled wine with a piece of bread and some cheese.

I hope to learn a lot from the community.

Welcome Sharky / Gwen! The Ancient City was such a great read,. The old religion of the hearth provides an interesting view on so many things. I remember a video of an old farmer who talked just like that, who did not see himself as an individual, only as part of the land. As if individuality was not invented yet, like the title of the other book you mention suggests, "Inventing the Individual". I haven't read that, I'll see if I can find that somewhere, thanks for sharing.
