My DS35 is also motivated to drink due to OCD.
Yes, it is a tough condition, but “Glory be to God for dappled things.” Between our illness and wellness lies a thin pervious membrane. I’ve tried SSRIs, CBT, and anti-seizure drugs. IME consistent exercise is the best mitigator. Mitigator, not eradicator, unfortunately. All my best to your son.

@chenda Love that about your granddad and Guinness. Agreed that first swig triggers a Pavlovian relaxation response. Somehow we gotta reprogram ourselves.

I have never understood the appeal of alcohol. I dabbled a little at university, trying to work out what the big deal is, but never got into it properly and haven't had a drop for at least 20 years. I often read euphoric accounts from people who have given up alcohol or smoking. It is clear that they have got a sense of achievement and they vividly describe how much better they feel. I am somewhat envious of this, and this makes me want to start up an alcohol addiction so I can give it up again! :D

Three weeks since I last drank and all's going well. I'm currently in Turkey, and there was an initial sun-fueled craving for alcohol. Alcohol-free drinks don't seem to exist here, apart from a 'virgin mojito' which was basically lemonade. So I'm mostly on the sparkling water which gives something of the same refreshing feel.

The other night we went out with some Russian émigrés, who were great fun and we ended up at some heavy metal club until 4am. Being sober was great and doesn't really change the experience. I also remembered to wear ear plugs, so I was both hangover free and tinnitus free in the morning. The alcohol budget has now been diverted to a Thai massage and I now feel like a duvet which has been shaken out in a fresh cover.

When I read that description it felt that I had a shower of purple fog with my sunglases on. Happy holiday there sober Chenda!

What a great idea! I would divert my cookie budget to massage, but it would only afford me maybe a couple rounds in the coin-operated massage chair in the mostly abandoned mall down the road.

Have you tryed ayran already? I imagine you did, but just forgot it existed.
I find it very good and refreshing, it's sugar and alcohol free.

@J - thank you.

@7w5 - I wish massage was more affordable. In Turkey you can get hour full body massage for ~ £12, back home that would literally cost more than the flights here.

@jean - Thanks for the recommendation, I tried it this evening it's a good choice.

@chenda;

Yeah, going rate here is around $75/hour with tip. That's like a year's worth of home baked cookies. I gues, if I want to get my spending back below planet killing level seems like I'm going to have to chill on the cookies so I can go back to trading erotic capital for amateur massage*. Although, I suppose it is possible that I could find a masseuse who has a kid in danger of failing Algebra and effect a barter.

*Although, one of the body positivity novels I recently added to my stacks featured a very thick female protagonist who becomes romantically involved with the CEO trainer of an All Bodies Inclusive fitness app, and there is a scene where he provides foot massage after making her run a lot...

So, its been a month now and I think this was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. 4 weeks ago tomorrow I woke up on a deflated lilo in a strange flat in Croydon wondering if I was going to throw up all over the carpet. I can't imagine ever doing that again and I absolutely never want to do that again. I'm still not certain if I will ever drink again or whether I might have one or two on special occasions. There is a movement called the 99% sober or something where they only drink on special occasions. My concern with this is that I might start to backslide, and besides it seems a bit pointless when the benefits are so obvious and alcohol free drinks are so good.

The best alcohol free beers so far are Big Drop and Guinness, both of which genuinely tasted like the real thing. Brewdog was far too sweet for my tastes. Proseeco 0% varies between ok-ish to utterly undrinkable. The benefits so far include better sleep, better skin, more energy and concentration and - excuse the TMI - an end to vaginal dryness. I also find myself liking being sober in social situations. I think my tendency towards anxiety and depression is somewhat improving as well (doubtless at least in part due to sleeping better) although its still early days for that. I am not expecting it to go entirely, but the brain can apparently take up to a year to fully repair from alcohol consumption (at least according to some studies) so hopefully I will continue to improve mentally.

By a strange coincidence Amy just informed me she has also given up alcohol, following a binge drinking session which ended with paramedics. I was amazed. All she needs to do now is loose 50 pounds and she'll be transformed into a new person.

Turkey continues to be great, we might road trip to Istanbul next week. It would be nice to see more of the real Turkey outside the tourist areas. Wondered around a nice mosque this morning and seen lots of Greco-Roman stuff, amphitheatres and such like. I am not big on archaeology but in small doses its nice. Its mostly sunny, although gets coat wearing cold in the evenings. I think I am going to do the cosmetic surgery. I was speaking to a lovely Turkish women who recently had a similar operation and the results were very clearly positive. I could get it done much cheaper in Turkey but I think it would be preferable to get it done back home where there is better assurance of quality and legal recourse if something went wrong.

@7w5 - putting 'trained massuse' on a tinder profile might be worthwhile. Surprisingly I have never seen anyone do that.

Yes, there have been quite a few stories in the UK media lately about surgery in Turkey that went badly, in some cases leading to fatalities.

No excuses necessary! The U.S. Military spends 84 million annually on Viagra prescriptions, so I think a bit more free speech on the topic of female issues is well warranted. Given that affluent older men are the biggest consumers of Viagra and affluent older post-menopausal women are the fastest growing co-hort of alcoholics, it seems like there's gotta be a giant train wreck of "Ouchie" a'coming on down the track.

Yes Istanbul is great. So much history. (Long ago) I got a bath and massage on a warm stone in a very old hamman, with a stone dome on it. Not changed since centuries. And visited the Aya Sofia. The building skills were phenomenal in those days about 1000 years ago. So Chenda have a pleasant trip!

Istanbul is the only city I have visited that rivals Rome in terms of pure architectural beauty IMO (sorry Paris), and the food is amazing.

Great stuff chenda, and again thanks for starting this. I was definitely drinking too much, and it’s now been a non-insignificant time I have happily managed to stay at a very low alcohol consumption.
I like the fact that now I drink like most southern Italians do: very often, but in very small quantities.
Saturday (yesterday) is one of the “cheat” days, and I had a beer and a gin, which doesn’t sound great unless you consider that the one beer was a 33cl I split 50/50 with my wife, and the gin was a 2mm mini sip for after dinner.

Today is the big test, I am watching the Super Bowl in NYC with some fiends visiting from Italy.
They are ex-waterpolo teammates, who tend to drink quite a bit of beer (I’m the shortest and lightest at 6’1” 200lbs, the other two are 6’3” and 6’6” respectively).
If I get out of today unscathed that would be a major stepping stone.
Will report here, Vegas bookmakers have a line for each of the possible two posts from tonight:

“Hello forum, I am happy to report that I refrained from excessive drinking and I am going to bed feeling great”
+18000 odds

“Dheisjfjeieop whesshshsss blrbbb”
-500 odds

I used to believe* that there was a correlation between alcohol consumption and boring activities, because I don't like alcohol or watching sports. Luckily, it has become more socially acceptable to read at any event now that books can be accessed on phone. Also, I do like chips and dips.

*Until I read a book on the topic of the effect of testosterone on the brain which described the elation experienced by those with high testosterone levels when an object that is moving/moved in the visual field is acted upon in a manner which directs it to a specific goal. This is also generally related to the basic organism motion of "grasping."

@chenda I always had trouble with the taste.
I have just today placed an order on Amazon for a new* product from suntory called “all free” that is a non-alc “beer” done with a different technology vs the regular ones.
The cost is obscene ($20 per 6 pack) but if it is even half as good as their magnificent Ebisu or Premium Malt beers (the only beers that rival Czech beers IMO) I will be in.

Site for info:
https://all-free.suntory.com/

*In the West; it’s been around in Japan for a while but never tried it.

Well, the night went kinda in between.
I definitely drank more than I wanted (3 10oz beers) but still I’m happy I have everything under control and drank less than I would normally had in the past.

That's pretty good! Only a pint and a half : ) I'll have to try Suntory. There are so many different alcohol free beers now available, and it means you can keep supporting local pubs and breweries.

Thank you both.

The last few days have been a living hell, I won't say much more than I wouldn't wish this on anyone. However, this afternoon things have improved. We have had some potentially good news about care options for dad. I went to a church and it felt comforting. I can eat solid foods. I am hoping to be able to sleep. I can think about other things. I am grateful for the many good things I still have.

In the immortal words of Steve McCroskey, it looks like you picked the wrong week to quit drinking. Hang in there.
