Participating in clinical trials

Has anyone ever had any experience with this ? As a volunteer you can earn £1000s taking part in clinical trials, depending on the length of the trial.
Payment is for your time and inconvenience and is never a reward for risk, which generally seems low. From what I've read so far, the main issue is boredom sitting around in a hospital ward for days on end.
