I have done the baking soda +vinegar thing, sometimes for up to a year. My hair/scalp never really adjusted, didn't seem to matter if I "washed" frequently or infrequently. I think if I had less hair it might work better. Ultimately I went back to shampoo and I wash my hair about once a week. A large bottle of shampoo easily lasts me a year (what with only washing 1x/week and then not using very much) so I don't really feel that this is the best area to target for further frugality.
Do we really need shampoo?

Hi ERE people, first post!
I've been shampoo-free for about 18 months now. When I started I had hair down to my shoulders. For me it works totally fine, no problems at all. I just rinse with water in the shower and run my fingers through my hair and it stays clean and looks nice. It's cut short nowadays and is just fine that way too.
I think some people like me have naturally manageable hair and some people have oily/tangly hair that doesn't look as good without shampoo. My wife tried for several weeks and just got really greasy, so maybe I'm lucky. I never do any vinegar or anything other than water.

@chicago: I agree it's an insignificant avenue for cost savings. For me it was a mix of curiosity and innate minimalism. Health and environmental reasons are secondary considerations (I find it hard to believe shampoo contributes to any health issues but you never know).
Now I'm continuing because I was pleasantly surprised by the improvement in my hair.
EDIT: I guess I should add that after almost a week since I used shampoo for the first time in a month, my hair has remained a uniform texture--no dry patches, no oily patches--and though it still looks and feels thicker and styles easier, the "tacky" feeling is gone. It underwent a metamorphosis during that month in the grease cocoon, lol.
