Main thing with hobby costs is to avoid/reduce the recurring expenses.
Fishing doesn't cost all that much until you decide you need a pair of chest waders because you're out splashing around in winter streams chasing winter steelhead. Waders are consumables... buying used means they won't last as long.
Ugh, I just ponied up $250 for new chest waders and I sure hope I made the right purchase.
