I' try setting Airplane mode as the default to see if that improves battery life. Even when you're not doing anything on the phone, it's in constant communication with the cell towers (just passively tracking them if nothing else).

If you have mobile data enabled then there will be a constant trickle of data going to and from the phone (notifications, find my, etc). Just turning this off may help without disabling the phone part.
