Best Pannier/Bags for Bicycle?
Best Pannier/Bags for Bicycle?
I have a newer Specialized Cirrus Comp. I've never used bags on the back of my bike, but want to start.
Can you recommend which setup I should get? And a cheaper way of getting them? I"ve seen some for sale on Craigslist.
I need them to be rain proof.
Any opinions are appreciated....

I have Ortlieb Classics in both the small (front of bike) and large (rear). They are waterproof and very durable. Unfortunately they are very expensive but I got mine from craigslist and ebay.

I've just started using the Bushwhacker Omaha - Bicycle Grocery Panniers:

Simple and effective, though with $100 weight of groceries I must remain seated to keep everything balanced.

@rubic - it looks like the Bushwacker Omaha may potentially interfere with pedal travel if your heel sticks out? Is there an adjustment to move them more rearward if they do interfere?
Otherwise, they look like a good choice for my fishing bicycle. Wire baskets would probably make an undesireable impression on the fish flesh and those look like they'd wash clean of fish goo.

Does anyone know of a type of rear panniers that would work with a child seat like this?

Henrik, probably an extrawheel trailer. http://www.extrawheel.com/
I've used several different panniers and Ortliebs are by far the best for their durability and attachment mechanism. Buy the cheaper PVC model as they are more durable than the more expensive cordura version. That said, REI has one that comes close in quality for much less.

Since this is ERE and we should avoid spending money, here are plans for a nearly free set of panniers made out of cat litter boxes. They are a lot better than they sound:

Great find, Gilberto!!!
One thing for sure is that you will need a rear luggage rack.
I'm still pitching my love for Bike Nashbar house brand. With a little patience, you can find what you need on sale and with a one day extra 20% off.
I just bought a 26 inch mountainbike wheelset for $80 delivered and taxed. I'm going to build up a city bike with an old huffy frame and some mustache handlebars I have around.

I have been satisfied with Topeak's bags:

Topeak is not quite as nice as Ortleib, but is cheaper.
