The small living movement fascinates me. I've always been attracted to efficiency and functional devices, but the small living trend has brought about a correspondingly high price tag. I remember seeing another guy who lived in a custom-made small apartment--in this case, a Manhattan studio with completely customized furniture. He spent $200,000 on everything--which is really enough to buy a much bigger apartment, even in NYC.
While he lives in an old building, which is ecological, I wonder if all of this new, custom-built furniture is really that ecological, let alone economical. Why not just buy used furniture and live in a bigger old apartment building?

secretwealth, I agree. I love the new ideas coming out of the small-living community. What I really like is when they take RV/Boat/Airplane/Train ideas and use them in regular housing. There is no reason why a creative person could not repurpose items and make them work in the same sized space for a fraction of the cost. I think I'll start a company that buys up old train-sleeper cars and installs the compartments in homes.

@JasonR: About that container in the loft apartment--WTF? Why would anyone want to waste so much good housing space? That's in San Francisco, which has some of the nicest parks in the world, so no need to create "outdoor space" inside the apartment, as the write-up says. Plus, that area--Pacific Heights--is right next to a huge park as well as the bay itself.
Another case of crazy rich people if you ask me.
