Very interesting, but not the right time for me.

It's worthwhile to think about how you want to structure this. I think a social only group is possible, but unlikely to be succesful long term based on the longevity of other groups here. There is a lot of insight from the discussion on the second MMG thread here starting with @grundomatic's post.

Further down @AH hammers on some insights from his experiences

tl;dr of the below: I perceive a difference between idea/topic discussion groups and mastermind groups where the focus is to help individuals with their progress on projects. They are different kinds of things. I think expecting continuity and attendance loyalty out of a discussion group is unrealistic, wheras I think it's an emergent property of a 'real' MMG (focused on individuals and their projects). I suggest that discussion groups call themselves discussion groups and plan for short time horizons. If the properties of an MMG is desired, focus on the member's stories and challenges instead of topics.

This plays out in the history of MMGs and groups on the forum :

Active
-AH MMG: 4+ years. Biweekly meetings
-Fiction Writing MMG: ~2.5 years. Occasional meetings Mostly active on Discord

Former MMGs
-MMG #2 discussion group: ~2 years. Monthly(?) meetings
-EcologyMMG: 2 years. Biweekly meetings
-RepairCafe MMG: 1 year. Monthly Meetings
-Plotkin MMG: ~9 months. Unsure of meeting frequency
-Knot MMG: 2 meetings (Ongoing active signal chat)

------

If you go for a more structured route (or even if you don't), I would highly encourage starting a group chat elsewhere, via Signal or something else. That's been the best aspect of my experience with MMGs. If the forum is a grad school environment, then the chats are an undergrad/high school environment where I can joke around, discuss personal issues I wouldn't share here, and talk about politically or philosphically sensitive topics (for the forum).

Hi all, an update from me as the OPer in whose journal an impulse to create this group has sparked.

Last month I had gone on a trip where I had no Internet / little technology for a few days and realised that currently it is better aim to spend more time away from screens rather than watching screens. I do heaps of looking at screens nowadays, unlike in my previous job which was 100% physical presence and interacting with people in the meat space.

So I opted out from the initiative, but I think folk mentioned up-thread are still organising it, or have organised it already.

I mostly post this here now because after opting out I had been PMed on a couple of occasions by forumites who said they would like to join the hive mind.

For anyone else who would like to join (or create another one - there seems to be demand for it!) I suggest to post here (or set up a new thread with another group!).

Yes, we had a video call where we had four different EREmites on it early in May and are now planning one later in June. I would certainly say we have space for some more people.
