Beau Miles on the second-hand life:

I watched this... Was hoping for a little nugget of wisdom or something at the end. A little disappointed to just have it end... After sorting a gazillion bits and nails and screws! That was sort of fascinating.

What did you like about the video, @WRC?

Playing at a local film festival here. I have not yet seen it but it looks like it may fit here.

Hehe. This was excellent! Thanks for sharing.

It makes me think of the fantasy I have of someday deleting my LinkedIn profile.

A few different things. It is the other side of the story of the "junk shed" that somebody linked to upthread. It is great to see a project come to fruition, like building a beautiful backyard workspace/she-shed with salvaged timber and nails. But...that required years or even decades of salvaging and saving. In this case he talks about taking on materials saved by his grandparents.

Ultimately the video offers a look inside the mind of someone who despises waste, who is drawn to creative repurposing, and bringing something back to life. The habit he discusses can be an affliction for the ERE-minded individual. The desire to extend the life of materials tossed aside, the desire to repurpose those into something useful and beautiful, it is almost innate. Sometimes that can drive one crazy as you have stuff all over the place.

He has some other videos where he is salvaging roof beams, or building with repurposed wood and nails, and these add some context.

It also reminded me a lot of my father, and how he tends to save odd bits and ends for decades. Sometimes it looks or feels like clutter, but it is amazing how he can pull out an odd part or loose end to fix something.

@wrc

Ha! Just watched the video. I am currently sorting out tons of screws and nails in my shop. I just got so irritated on not being able to find anything but knowing I for sure had it somewhere. As a recovering second-hander, I have developed the ability to throw something away if it's not practical thank goodness but I also really enjoy using up my current stock that I have salvaged. Very satisfying.

ARTE is a publicly funded European medium. Originally French-German and not super well-known, you might not be aware that they now also produce content in English, Italian, Polish and Spanish. Their content in general is worth exploring even if from some countries, you might have to use a vpn to get to it. Excellently supported by yt-dlp.

A recent example of their production that might appeal to eremites:

Jem Bendell posted the documentary he did last year with the release of 'Breaking Together' on youtube. I have mixed feelings about Bendell but he's a fascinating guy.

Possibly.

For my money, a guy named Philip Stephens used to do really good work in what I call junk punk. This has certainly been an obsession of mine for a while.

Buy Now: The Shopping Conspiracy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVfZw_e ... el=Netflix

A new anti-consumerism doucmentary on Netflix. The doc features interviews from an array of high level executives and employees from multinational corporations (Adidas, Unilever, Amazon, Apple and more) who discuss some of the strategies and techniques that companies use/have used to get people to buy stuff as well as some of the effects of so much consumption.

I caught the interview for this article on PBS. Not sure how to respond to it in live but it does shine a spotlight on some issues with elite education.

Thanks for sharing this. I started the Atlantic article the other day - this is a good reminder to finish it. I thought it started strong making some interesting compelling points.

I enjoy his work generally. Recently got thru most of The Second Mountain and enjoyed what he had to say - save the religious stuff.

I read Excellent Sheep: The miseducation of the American Elite years ago and enjoyed that too. Now that I think of it, I should probably give that book a little credit for helping me breakaway from my normie life some.

This hour long speech by David Brooks was really encouraging and restored a little faith in humanity for me. I highly recommend it. It's about his book How To Know A Person.

I stumbled on Jared Henderson's YouTube content a couple months ago. He has a PhD in philosophy, realized becoming a professor wasn't in the cards, spent a couple years in tech, and now makes videos full time.

An interesting assortment of videos on science fiction, academia, how to become a better reader/writer, overviews of classic philosophy books, philosophic literature, and that kind of stuff. A good resource to find new books, some of which are classics and easy to read in a day or weekend.
