If you want to set it up - be my guest. IRC requires next to no setup (and, I'm on Freenode for OSS stuff anyway)

I think that honestly, there isn't enough interest for it to be worthwhile (I feel like this forum is more than enough given the amount of activity), and there are other issues as well: this is Jacob's forum... how exactly is it tied to him? Why should people put in the effort to reply to people knowing that it's only temporary (as opposed to here, where people know every topic is logged) Who will moderate it, etc...

But, I do think that for some casual thoughts/questions/ideas/works of progress that people might have, or if people want to have a more back-and-fourth exchange, this forum doesn't really cut it.

Honestly, I don't see the point of a WhatsApp group, Discord server, or IRC chatroom.

The forums work well enough.

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Speak truth, speak pleasantly,
Speak not truth unpleasantly
Also speak not the untruth even if pleasant
This is the Dharma Eternal.
~Memoirs of Manu

Silence is better than speech
If speak you must, speak truth,
If truth is to be told, tell truth agreeably
If what is agreeable is to be said then it is
better to say that which is consistent with Dharma.

If you can't say something nice, Reddit is probably not for you

Yay, fellow EREs embrace IRC! Long live IRC!

So, technically, unofficial/"about" freenode channels should have a double namespace. Single namespace is "reserved for official channels of on-topic projects."

I went ahead and registered ##ere . I'm a frequent user of Freenode, so I will hang out and lurk in both channels, and I hope to see someone from here there soon! The last time #ere was used, according to chanserv, was ~518 weeks ago.

Somebody asked how you can use IRC on your phone. There are various IRC apps depending on your platform, but be careful because they can drain battery life! Palaver and igloo are options on iOS.

I can't use freenode because I am on a VPN.

You are banned from this server- Your VPN is not permitted to connect to freenode. Email proxyscan@freenode.net for more information

Freenode does SSL on 6697 or "plaintext" IRC on 6667
