A Discord server might be what you need. Free and browser-based. Invitations/links to the server can be set to expire or revoked so can be sent upon request to people. Within the server you can store permanent info (like schedules, instructions, etc.) in stickied messages, but still control visitors' levels of access via channels. It's also good for real-time messaging. As the server admin you can remove people or posts pretty easily.

I got a genuine chuckle out of it so thank you.

@CL

Didn't Jacob start a thread about sharing skills? What happened to that? Seems like if someone would take the initiative your ideas and his could happen.

A Discord server might be what you need.
I looked at it, created a my own username and played around. It looks like I can create a private server and provide individual permissions for people to see content, blocking the public. My biggest concern with this platform is that I'm not sure if the server will stay active with a period of inactivity? It doesn't seem to specify this anywhere.

Each person here would need a discord account, and would have to join the server and let me know so that I can provide them permission to see/post. This would be difficult with different/varying usernames between platforms, so people would probably have to remain consistent. Hence create a seperate discord account just for the ERE travel server if they already have an account there.

If we go this route, I'd have to come up with a basic qualifier for posters here, to get access there. I'd probably post a thread here with a link to that server. So the additional layer of security would be whatever that qualifier is here + no public views. For the qualifier, I was thinking of something like either 100 posts on ERE, or having started your own journal, or a detailed intro post. Setting the bar too high sucks for newer people, but too low makes it easier for someone trying to get someone's personal info.

Feedback? Would this make anyone more comfortable to post in a travel thread?

Edit: @jacob, if you are still following this conversation, is it possible to have a singular thread within phpBB ERE forum that would require permission to view or post? This would be the simplest solution.

Thanks! If you use it regularly, is anything I stated above otherwise inaccurate? I'm speaking from 10 minutes of playing around.

your discord account can be anything, and you can change your name into something different for each server you are a member of. So people can use pre-existing accounts if they want to. It's both a mobile and a desktop app which makes it convenient, and sharing pictures is much much easier. The disadvantage is that as with any other social media platform, it's built for socializing not for archiving content. Old content seems to be there and searchable, but it's much more for in-the-moment socializing than posting long thoughtful pieces. The server stays active and you stay joined even if you don't visit it for extended periods of time. Further, you are correct that you can make the server undiscoverable by the general public and that you can issue invites for people to join. There are permanent invites, which is one stable link for everyone (but this can be leaked) or temporary invites, which expire after ... unsure how long. There are also roles and bots and emoji and the like, if anyone is interested in playing around with those things.

@ertyu
Thanks for the low-down. Yeah those temp links look like they'd be active for 24 hours. I think the general perm link would be OK, as long as I disable the @everyone ability to read or post. Then individually give users permission one they have joined. At least that's how I read it, I haven't tested it. It's good to know you can change usernames.
_________

Anway, back to the original question, would this make people more likely to post in a travel thread thanks to the additional layers, or less likely because it's a PITA?

No difference to me; for better or worse I'm not concerned about privacy via this forum, but I'm motivated enough to participate that I'd jump through the hoops to get access.

Less likely bordering on unlikely for the discord cloak and dagger stuff. What's wrong with moving to PM or email for the personal stuff like locations and times? Where do you want to set the privacy bar? Is it okay to sharing info with your 400 closest qualified/discord friends but you don't want the info to be googlable?

I don't think it's possible to give people special permission to a singular thread. However, it would be possible to create a new class of users e.g. "qualified users" who would have exclusive access to a separate forum on the forums. Like, there's a forum for Administrative stuff here that only moderators(*) can see.

However, the downside of this is that it's likely that a lot the forum activity will move "behind closed doors". While this initially seems like there's no cost to the individuals doing this, it will eventually mean that fewer people join the forum. IOW, putting an existing "network" behind the screen leads reduced generation of new networks and reduced accretion to existing networks.

(*) A defunct user class.

I’m wondering how the privacy concerns of this initiative is different than the privacy concerns of past Meetups, which (right?) have all been conducted via a thread>PMs>etc?

Perhaps just start with a normal forum thread and if it nosedives because everyone wants more security, go from there?

Yep sounds good to me. I started setting up the discord server and it's a pain, plus I, personally, feel like making special groups is stupid and disinclusivity (nice, another fake new word today, that's two!) doesn't foster friendly play. I also, generally, feel like it's best to keep your life mostly public. Because then there aren't secrets someone can try to use against you. If I screw up, fine, fix it and move on. Again, a personal opinion, and I have never personally been on the wrong side of a vicious mob, so there's that.

I certainly get privacy concerns for some people, but they don't have to post in the thread and can respond via PM's. I think the threads issues for people with privacy concerns can mostly be bypassed. If they want to participate and actively PM people who post plans that may be near to their own travel plans or home, geographically & in timing, they can certainly reach out to see if a poster wants to make modifications to make it work.

It's settled then. :D

Sounds a lot like a significantly more focused couchsurfing is about to be going on :)

I used it a lot, then google got better at searching and it was the number one link for anyone who searched my name. It is too unique worldwide to not just get lost in the noise of other people. Should just change my name to John Smith.

After being asked about it by a recruiter, temporary flat mate and in a job interview within the space of 3 months I decided everyone had become a nosy bugger and hid it. Or at least the were now happier announcing they were nosy...more likely.

What's a day in the life like for you these days? You've dropped some hints that you make wine, bike for hours and make tortillas. I read your journal but I realized that you don't seem to talk about the day to day living. It's all big picture planning, which is cool and I like reading it. I also like hearing about how people live and what cool things they've figured out to do now that they're not wasting a bunch of time at a jobby-job. Anyway, just hoping for some semi-ere day dream material while I grind it out for a few more months.

Update 9/24/2020

Day to day life
Now that I’ve mostly gotten over the unexpected emotions of being a true unemployed semi-ERE’er, life is pretty good. My weekends and weekdays are mostly the opposite of the average person. My GF is mostly off on weekends, as are most other adults, so I’m really busy then and use the weekdays as more of a recovery from weekends.

Last weekend is a pretty good example. Friday afternoon/evening the GF and I went on a nice 20ish mile bike ride on the MN side of the river. We explored a newly built bike path on the south side of town for awhile to see how far it went and what it gave access too. Saturday we drove about 30 miles south to a national grassland area and went on a 10 mile loop hike with my best friend and his wife. From there they went home, and the GF and I met up with her friend at the local casino which was only a few miles further south. I had some horse crap on my shirt from my friends dogs paw during the hike, it was good luck! On Sunday the GF and I went to a movie, they are running 1$ deals on old movies since COVID has disrupted the Hollywood flow of craptasticness. I’ve probably seen 5 old movies in the last month with this deal. Then we met up with another friend who wanted us to try her chili and hung out chatting for a couple hours.

Most weekdays are less intensive. I’m a late night person, so I’m rarely asleep before 2AM. My days start 10-11ish AM. I usually start the day in contemplative mode with a cup of coffee and work my mind through whatever little scheme is most preoccupying at the time. I try to tidy up around the house, do a few things for the GF if she needs it done, laundry, or maybe some batch cooking for later. Then I do a little body weight resistance (only about 10-15 mins a day) and go for a more intense bike ride. Usually, doing any little errands that need to be done in the process of the ride. Afterwards I come home and read current events, the forum, and maybe some of a book. I usually go stir crazy after a bit and end up back outside, either on a less intense bike ride, at my friends or the community garden, a walk in the park, or go to the local pool (it just closed for the winter :( ) a few blocks away and swim. Once the GF is off, I come home and we spend a couple hours together talking while she cooks and eats (I intermittent fast and always only eat once daily a couple hours before bed). She’s in bed pretty early so I’ll often go downtown to the barcade to play video games. Or I often work on the, generally less well laid out than I thought at the time, scheme I have going. Sometimes that means reading or watching youtube videos (research phases), sometimes that means physically working on something.

I’ve been super thankful that I ended up living where I do. This has been almost as big a component to 2020 being a normal year for my personal life (vs disaster for many) as ERE. I don’t want to turn this into a COVID debate, but I very much believe that extreme lockdowns are not needed now that we have some pretty good data on the disease. I happenstanced into an area that ideologically aligns with my more libertarian opinions. Hence have had the ability to make my own decisions in this realm. This means Fargo is checking a couple more boxes for me. Another being the food supply chain.

Semi-ERE Scheme'en
One of my many schemes this past year has been trying to follow the food, so to speak, that comes from my area locally. I have been pleasantly surprised that most staples are not only produced, but also packed and processed locally. I realize this agriculture is still petroleum based, but in intermediate shakeups, like COVID, when farmers elsewhere literally have to bury their product, here there are very active local supply lines available. I still find myself trying to go one step further all the time though. So, I’m trying to set myself up with basics to process some raw product if needed. Hence things like the wine making scheme. I’m interested in starting to mill my own grains (side note, can anyone recommend a quality, small kitchen-sized hand mill?) and go directly to the sources. Better to have some relationship with a local farmer(s) now, than wait until I need it. I’m also trying some basic foraging techniques by making things like acorn flour. I guess I feel the more that’s in my tool kit with food the better, and this has all been really very fun!

Admission of Guilt and More Scheme'en
I mentioned the casino above and wanted to “out” myself in my very unERE habit of gambling. I’ve purposely never mentioned this in my journal before, but it’s probably been a budget suck of $1000+ a year. Sorry folks, but I love it! Cards, blackjack, craps, the little shiny machines. So much fun! I’ve, more generally, mentioned a couple of bad habits that I need to give up before, and that’s the big one. I never really thought about comps much, but this year I looked into the local casinos comp program and learned how to hack it as best as possible. I’ve got it to the point now that I get $40-$75 of free play or useful other comps twice a month. This has had a fabulous impact on this entertainment expense, pretty much making it a break even activity at this point. It takes a little self-control and planning to maintain the comps and use them correctly, but I never thought I’d get to keep doing this post work… yea!!

Money Stuff
Lately the markets have tanked out a bit again and I’ve been seeing my net worth drop a bit. I’m trying to focus on the continued drop on the expense side, since I have more than enough for FI at 1 JAFI. Plus I’m about 35% cash at the moment (purposefully), so it’s performed really well (relative to everything else :P ). Frankly, it’s really not all that stressful. I spend much less time on investments now that I don’t have income to invest. Since I’ve been focusing on it less, these movements are less noise to me now that I’m not spending so much energy trying to make more money. Those of you still working may not believe this, but losing five figures in the markets means much less when you haven’t spend the last couple of months slaving away to save that much. Now they just feel like numbers, not all that life energy gone.

I guess that’s about it, thanks for reading!

This "weekend-weekday out of whack" is a definite drawback to semi-ERE - my daughter has struggled with it from the start. She never knew anything else than both parents being at home most of the time, so our family life naturally happens a lot when other parents are at work and kids are cared for out of the house. Her friends seldom have time to meet with her on the weekends, because they do road trips or activities with their parents. This was hard for her to understand when she was little. Now she has gotten used to it (being on her own and bored on weekends), and I suppose this problem will go away as soon as her friends are no longer hanging out with their parents :)

RE: the gambling - this nicely illustrates how one finds solutions as soon as there is enough time to play around with possibilities! How great that you can still indulge in your hobby that way without it being a drain on your ressources.

Seems like the next progression. A few years in and I can tell you that it feels like a card game to me.
