A Mop?
A Mop?
Anyone have an opinion on the best all around mop I should buy to mop my wood floors? I'm going to use water and vinegar to mop the floors after sweeping.
I'm not sure if I should buy one of those typical mops in Walgreens or get something that lasts longer?

jacob had a suggestion in an old thread of mine ... viewtopic.php?p=143796#p143796
I like mop heads that can go in the washing machine, whether DIY or store-bought.

Re: A Mop?
the best mop is the israeli mop which is a floor squeegee with a mop cloth.
those mop cloths are hard to find in the usa however. in any case, those mops are generally paired with water buckets you just throw on the floor, which is tile over a concrete base: the floor has a drain! so you squeegee all the water to the drain and then dry with the mop cloth, hahaha. it’s great though.
and are we talking about real hardwood floors? or that vinyl that looks like wood, what do they call it.... laminate, something?
anyway, last year i ended up buying this mop on amazon for my apartment:
https://www.amazon.com/Microfiber-Mop-H ... 01CFIHGLA/
it’s very good, washable, the replacements last forever unlike the swiffer, and you could probably diy more pads with microfiber and a sewing machine. they also have things that look like giant brillo pads if you need to scrub.
for spray i just use diluted sal-suds in a spray bottle because unlike soap it leaves no residue.
another good mop is the o-cedar, but i can’t use a big sloshing bucket safely in an apartment, so i didn’t bring it.

Not being a gadget person but a home making traditionalist, I prefer a square of jerga (Think Baja hoodie cloth.) with a hole in the middle threaded through a broom. For wood, just wring it out well. I like how the broom bristles underneath the fabric give some scrubbing action as needed. This cloth is sold by the length so you’ll have multiples. (Do hem as jerga unravels easily.) You could also use other rags in this fashion.
I also have a Libman Wonder Mop. https://libman.com/products/wonder-mop? ... 9922052252 (This was part of the cost of having help back in the day. Señora Frita’s cleaning equipment wasn’t good enough.) It works well and one does not have to touch the cleaning water. The drawbacks are needing to wash the head or buy extras in addition to having extra equipment serving just one purpose.

The o cedar works well enough for me, though I haven't compared it to anything else and I mop about once a year.
Re: A Mop?
In Mexico, it lasts for a long time. Gringos like paper towels.Alphaville wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 7:13 pmjerga is great, i grew up around it (lol) but where do you buy it?

Re: A Mop?
thanks! I just ordered the O Cedar....I'll just mop my real wood floors with some hot water and vinegar after I sweep once in a while. Probably once per month in my ranch house.Alphaville wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 2:30 pmthe best mop is the israeli mop which is a floor squeegee with a mop cloth.

Re: A Mop?
not sure of vinegar effect on wood as acid might ruin the coating (urethane is common).
but check out murphy’s oil soap, which i believe is canonical, and not expensive as i recall.
eta: see possible floor finishes: https://www.bobvila.com/articles/8-hard ... -finishes/
save the vinegar for the kitchen & bathroom

You don’t render your own lard?! My family complains if I try to use store bought.Alphaville wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 8:12 pmi can’t find jerga online, but after covid vaccine i’ll start asking around the mexistores where i buy manteca
Re: A Mop?
I use a splash of white vinegar with hot water. No problems with old or modern hardwood floors ever. Perhaps test in a corner behind the couch?Alphaville wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 9:04 pmnot sure of vinegar effect on wood as acid might ruin the coating (urethane is common).

Re: A Mop?
sounds like good idea. but as always - for example non consumerist solution includes using simple old cottons+physical force.
btw, is it like spam bots are getting smarter? or I'm just too cynical.

No, I think it's more likely to be "spam humans" making more of an effort (but not enough) to sneak in links. I don't understand why they keep trying since their accounts and posts get nuked within a day or two. Seems like a waste of their time.
Re: A Mop?
hmm. what's possible rate and for who is it profitable?!
Amazon Turk offers 1-3 USD/h, but I heard it's pain in the neck in terms of authentication testing.

Re: A Mop?
My guess is that this level of spamming, which I presume is semi-automated, works in most places and/or that whoever is paying never does any QA testing to realize that it doesn't work here. It's likely cheaper for them just to spread it everywhere w/o checking. Similar to how everybody gets a sales flyer even though n% go directly in the trash w/o being read.
