I'm looking to start using a VPN (I know, should've done this years ago but better late than never). After reading some reviews online, the consensus points to ExpressVPN as the clear winner. But it comes with a £75 a year price tag - a bit pricey for something I was doing without for years.
What VPN are you using/would you recommend? Is the difference between £7/m and £2/m noticeable for an average net user or is it just fluff and extra options which are not really useful?

We use TunnelBear, but I don't use it much. It seems OK and simple to use.

I have used PIA (Private Internet Access) for a while and it works well for my purposes. Not the fastest but is cost effective.

Proton VPN. Try the free version first. I use the plus.

What’s your threat model and use case? In other words, in what kind of situations are you liking to protect yourself?
PIA and Proton VPN are the 2 I hear recommended most often. I use PIA.
Stay away from anything free and anything with ties to a foreign power like Russia, China, etc.
The extra encryption from a VPN is going to slow down your traffic, so keep that trade off in mind if you’re using slow internet or a weak cell signal for data.

Not a real VPN but Opera (browser) gives you a new ip adr and let you choose from a list of countries, no encryption afaik . I use it from time to time to tjek out prices without revealing my true location. It’s free.

I can recommend Windscribe. I switched to it from PIA after hearing the news.
I like that they provide idiot-proof configuration guides for mobile phone, torrent clients, etc. They also have Netflix servers (UK/US/JP/CA).
They have a free version available (10GB/month with a limited selection of locations) if you want to try before paying. During the sales season (November-December), you could get a 3-year subscription for 40 USD or so.

I use OpenVPN. The software is free, but you need to pay for a server which you can get from any cloud hosting company. I use digital ocean for that. I think I pay about $5 a month per ip. I have 2, 1 ip for US and 1 ip for my home country. They also have a mobile app.
