Hi, I am a 16 year old Floridian and the ERE blog/forum has been my new rabbit hole for the past month or so. I have always had a distaste for spending but something about the mindset really clicked with me, and the financial aspect has been helpful since I obviously don't have much experience with managing my money . As for my place in the journey, I have a part time job where I am saving as much income as possible, and currently figuring out if/when I want to go to college, and what for. Welcome to the forums. Congrats on finding out about ERE/FIRE before making any major financial decisions.
I wouldn't say don't go to college, but I would say don't go to college if you aren't going to be able to leave with minimal/no debt or it isn't for a field that is in demand and accordingly compensated.

The world has really changed and people seem stuck in the "all college is good" idea, when it's just plain wrong. Why pay $25000 a year when all the best professors are really leaving the universities and teaching for free on youtube (Jordan Peterson is one example). Youtube is your education, kindle publishing is your textbooks.
You don't even have to wait. Here's some concrete things to do:
sign up for merch.amazon.com and learn graphic design on photoshop ($10 a month or so) or GIMP (free) - cost to start = free while potential earnings are huge
write 20-30 page kindle books and post them for free
create contentless books (IE journals) with unique covers on createspace = free to start
make videos on youtube if you like to talk and open a patreon at the end of the year.
You don't need permission nowadays to earn money, just work hard and be consistent.

Thank you! The reason ERE is so interesting to me is that it combines a lot of what I like in many philosophical positions/topics and backs it up with hard numbers and (anecdotal) proof of success. For example, when I was around 12 I thought myself above "things" and called this belief "minimalism" but that is more of an aesthetic preference than anything. I also went through a libertarian phase starting at 14 (still libertarian but not as enthusiastic). My upbringing in an upper-middle class family made me dissatisfied with the endless work-consume-work cycle. So the benefits to the ERE mindset that I can see are that asceticism, freedom, and responsibility become actionable ends in themselves -- in a personal way instead of political in the case of the last two -- at the same time giving me a way out of the trappings of the middle class.

I consider myself blessed not to have made major mistakes already. I forgot to mention that I am a high school senior at the moment. Right now my plan is to take a gap year working as a lab assistant( I am taking an advanced class in high school that will give me a certification that I'm qualified for the position) or in some other field to get work experience and an extra year to make sure I am going into college knowing exactly what I want out of it. Florida has a scholarship program for in-state universities that would allow me to go for no tuition and my parents are willing to pay for other expenses.

The other part will be finding something you are good at, is likely to make a good income and something you don't hate doing. Doing the certification and working in the field you are interested in before committing to it is definitely a good start.
If you manage to get out of college with a degree in something that will pay well without being in debt you can easily be on track to retire in under 10 years, more or less of course depending on where on the FIRE scale you end up. More ERE then you can do it in much less time, more MMM and it will probably take closer to 10 years.

Is the military an option for you? They'll pay for college expenses, and you can also enlist as MOS 68K (Army) Medical Laboratory Specialist (that MOS is eligible for a sign on bonus).
