East of the Cascades that would be no problem. Spokane in particular is barely an hour to the Montana line.
Walking distance to work though? Checking craigslist for Spokane, the available $500 rooms appear to be in homes which will be in the suburbs and, unless you work in retail or food, the jobs aren't near the suburbs.

I think you're splitting hairs and not picking the best possible battle there. Anyway, I walked 2½ miles to and from work each day in Chicago for seven years. Anywhere's within walking distance if you've got the time, as Steven Wright says.

I guess a few miles is OK. I can always get an electric bike or scooter for the weekdays (with studded tires for winter) and a little hatchback (with winter tires) for the weekends.

Relatively income tax-free, around people that want to socialize, and around nature are really important to me, that’s for sure. Maybe state income taxes would be OK, especially if I’m deferring most of my income anyway.

Just saw your @, unfortunately I don't have any contacts for sales jobs out that way. My previous company was HQ'd in NY, but ended up getting acquired/dissolved, and you won't want to work for the last one I was at. I have contacts in the Dallas, NYC, and SoCal areas, but none of those are on your list. Unfortunately most of these entry level (still $100K+ OTE) inside sales jobs require butt in seat (no remote/WFH) for the first year or two.

State taxes generally benefit the less wealthy - libraries, parks, public education, infrastructure, social safety nets, etc. There is waste too, but they could be a net positive in your strategy.

MID-NOVEMBER 2019

Last Set of Classes Scheduled

Finishing up finals for my 6 classes, and just signed up for the last 6. Free MPA by April almost in hand. I got a few in-person informational interviews at a couple places here in Miami, and one in Vermont. Nothing thus far out west. More outreach e-mails needed.

Dating Outreach Fun

Day game is still pretty fun. Today I met a pretty 26 yo walking her dog and got her # to reach out to tomorrow. Opened with "that's a cute dog, *pet pet*." lol. The cool thing is that it's becoming super obvious when a girl is interested/available. If they stay and talk rather than inputting a polite excuse before bailing, that's a good indicator. If they ask you questions, you're on the right track. If they say yes when you ask to escalate, that's a pretty good indicator. If they (actually) respond to the day-after hello text, that's pretty good too. And of course if they routinely show up to more dating-like activities, you're doing great. Just don't be negative nor text them more than they do you. And don't tell them "I love you" before they do.

Aside from her, I also met a 24 yo at a cafe. Opened with a comment-turned-conversation about a book she was reading. This day-game business is actually pretty easy. Takes more effort and skill-acquisition than the friends of friends game that college was, but it's eons away from the online dating nightmare, and the women tend to be prettier too. Currently have three fwb from these shenanigans, so yay. Fuck wearing braces part 34249387.

Road Trip

Trying to get a road-trip crew for mid Dec- early Jan. I figure I should drop the 1-2K needed to rent a car for a few weeks as I drive around UT, CO, MT, NV, and AZ. Necessary sacrifice :>

Quitting Habits and Adding Others

Put a blocker on my phone and computer. Anxiety and depression has decreased significantly since, on top of using the SAD light. Youtube has fallen so far from even a few years ago. So many of the videos are influencers telling you you're doing everything wrong. Seriously. The other day I was recommended a video on TONGUE POSTURE. wtf. Others are fancy people in fancy houses telling you you're lot isn't enough. Ads often pop up despite ad blockers. I've started to hate the medium aside from handyman videos and one or two subscriptions. SoundCloud for music works just fine. Places like Reddit also aren't that helpful/end up being super distracting. Putting a blocker on porn also is good, means you end up using it less and enjoying in-person physical interaction way more. Barrier of entry increased.

To replace all that I'm gonna purchase a Kindle Oasis or Paperwhite (not sure which yet) and a subscription for unlimited books/audiobooks. If Youtube and influencers are candy, then books and well-researched authors are a well-balanced meal. Will probably also get some other fun items, like roller blades and one of those electric kick-scooters.

I started running around and stretching again, and it feels good. Now to figure out how to stop doing work in bed when I don't have an office to go to in the morning.

I think I've decided that I've been basically doing my best to find ways to avoid work, but I seriously need to stop that if I want my $500K. So I'm going to do my best to actually work for years and figure out how to cope with the stresses that inevitably result. None of this WOOFing, work-for-stay, or other lazy short-term bullshit young Millennials tend to do. That doesn't mean I need to do this in Miami nor in a job I don't like, but it does mean working full-time, saving, & quitting it with the squirming. I also think finding a stable gf that's gonna stick around for a few years is an excellent accomplice in this plan. The globe trotters are an annoying distraction

Seven states—Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming—levy no personal income tax. Two (New Hampshire and Tennessee) don't tax wages, but do currently tax investment income and interest. Both are set to eliminate those taxes soon. Of those, only New Hampshire has no sales tax (While Alaska has no sales tax, the municipalities, where you'd likely live, are allowed sales tax).

.....

You need to check New Hampshire & Tennessee investment tax rates because they otherwise likely meet your criteria.

.....

Something you didn't mention that should probably be amongst your criteria: Medicaid expansion. If that's important, then of the no state income tax choices, Florida, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming would be ruled out.

Tennessee's will be 1% for 2020 and is going away in 2021. https://blog.rodefermoss.com/tennessee- ... l-schedule

NH's won't be going away completely until 2024. https://mcdonaldhopkins.com/Insights/Bl ... est-income

TN has a rather high sales tax, and it applies on groceries. NH has a high property tax. From my research, the overall tax burden in both states is about as good as it gets, slight edge to Tennessee I'd say. A $75k house in rural or small-town Tennessee pays about one-tenth the property tax as one in NH would (everything in NH is in a town).
In NH you can make Boston-level income, tho.

The solution to the high NH property tax is simple. Rent instead of own. And the high property tax rate and scant state welfare programs has the knock-on effect of keeping undesirables south of the border with Massachusetts where people vote for Elizabeth Warren and “free“ everything.

One notices the change of infrastructure quality as soon as they cross the state line on I-93 or 1-95. When I last interviewed in Boston, I saw the Red Line car had feces smeared on the side of the train and it looked like it had not been washed in weeks, or months.

In NH you can buy and walk around with firearms, open or concealed, without any kind of license. We have one of the lowest violent crime rates in the country.

CODING UPDATE

I tried coding and, hm, I don’t think I like it. Maybe it’s cause I’m kinda new at it; I’ll try it some more and see if getting good makes me like it more. Will see.

TRADES

I have been thinking of trying the trades though, since I remember really enjoying a metal-working inter-term course at AC and a 4-mo wood-working project in shop class in HS. Unfortunately, I’ve been so indoctrinated by the higher ed racket that I don’t even know where one goes to get trade certifications or an apprenticeship, let alone what the cost of such a thing might be, or what the different fields are (aside from basics like electrician, plumber, welder, carpenter, computer networking, etc). I feel like the trades would be a great way to travel around and have a real goddamn, tangible SKILL. Great for the apocalypse too. (Y)

LANGUAGES

Languages are going well. I’m now reading L’étranger on my new Kindle, with Audible reading it to me. Also finishing 3% in Portuguese and can pretty much understand all of it. I guess Spanish I just talk to my parents, and well, English I use all the time.

————
NEXT STEP

I’m thinking what I’d like to work toward is, if I do the 9-5 thing with the MS, doing it in a naturey place with a loving gf (probably the only way to make it tolerable). And if I don’t do the 9-5 thing, getting a skill I can travel around with and earn more than min wage (the travel should be entertaining enough). Either way, I at least enjoy the experience, so even if all my retirement accounts get confiscated when govt programs go bankrupt, at least I’ll have enjoyed the accumulation years and have a wide array of real, non-bullshit skills.

I gained the most experience working as grunt labor for a general contractor while in HS and Uni. The guy liked to think aloud. I just listened and asked questions. He did things like kitchen/bath remodels, store fixture installs and a wide variety of stuff. I learned everything, tile work, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, cabinetry, general half-assed repairs, masonry, drywall, hanging doors and windows. I carried a lot of heavy shit and worked hard but learned a lot of useful stuff.

Well, the guns are definitely not a plus for me in NH, but beyond that, the state has a huge worker shortage and trouble attracting young people and workers (who then go on to make more young workers).

It is turning into a full-on healthcare crisis in the state, actually. Life free while you can because the dying is going to be ugly if you have to go to a nursing home.

I second Scott2 that taxes over-all benefit those with lower income. It can* also shows a willingness to care for the population that can be important to quality of life.

*Can also be waste, so due diligence is required, as always.

I truly think you need to stop chasing your tail with all of the hypothetical and actually make some real moves. Every time you seemingly find a viable path forward, you get distracted by all of your other options, which are endless, because you're still at square one.

@2Birds1Stone - It's entirely consistent with the INFP standard/locked-in curse. Very hard to change. It's like how INTPs build giant analytical/logical structures of whatever catches their fancy ... except it's done with feelings and here on the subject of life planning. It's a wild train ride(*) for an INTJ to watch but maybe think of it as the INFP painting a canvas with a little happy tree here and a pet squirrel there. It's only frustrating to watch if you expect to obtain a result-driven plan.

(*) Insofar the INTJ perceives it as a debate or a process that should lead to some result. In such a case, the INFP's secondary Ne is getting processed by the INTJs secondary Te (hard work) ... but the actual material of the INFP is the dominant Fi (they just want to find their authentic selves --- something that will never happen, but it's all about the journey) ... which the INTJ trying to make sense of it with their dominant Ni. So basically the chain of communication is Fi->Ne->Te->Ni... which can be very exhausting.

Hm, I think I did make real moves. Namely, trying out coding, pushing yes to the road-trip out west, and getting a Kindle for greater language acquisition. I'm stuck in Miami until I finish the degree in April, so not much I can do aside from look for jobs out west and think-through where to go from here.

Potential consistency aside, I don't think I'm an INFP. I know many INFPs, and have dated probably 10 of them by now. They tend to be very bad at planning, and I am good at planning + being organized. :p

Incidentally, INTJs should check their #personalityprivilege. If the Myers Briggs has any bearing, you guys have it pretty easy when it comes to profitable career choices and planning logically rather than emotionally. Take it easy on the rest of us plebes. :p:p

every type has their own #personalityprivilege.

Most INTJs - as a sort of trade for their potential to sit down and learn math, physics, coding, are the same amount lacking in their potential to learn empathy, schmoozing, fitting in by enjoying stupid traditions, and so on.

(some folks will really find annoyance or humor in the dynamic here)
THF - Help!
People - [Lots of advice]
THF - Check your privilege

--------------

On dating - If you're not already, I recommend you do at least SOME dating of people that are opposite of your Myers Briggs type, at least on some of the letters. Me, as an INTJ, I find I can't stand dating *S**. I've had great times with some ENFPs

not sure i want as much advice anymore, just enjoying trying different stuff out

i like the ones that find humor in our lively dynamic :p

yea, S’s are the worst, except for cuddling and sex. They can do knit that more easily than a lot of N’s I think. I hate ISFPs the worst though: they tend to be fake and awesome until they show their true colors and are actually everything but. INFPs are the best (when they manage to show up, or stay awhile). INTJs are great for me to argue with and ghost ‘cause they’re no fun. And ENTPs & INTPS are so easy to explore ideas with.<3

I do not consider the mind to be a zero sum game. Personality only informs preferences, not ability.

Just a random but slightly relevant side note: through self administered tests I've always come up as ENTJ, but our resident typing expert has me pegged as an ESTJ. Guess I'm the worst, but I won't try to cuddle with you.

I don’t think I’ve been close to an ESTJ yet. I don’t know much about you tbh. ISTJ was my first boss, and they’re like the “steady corporate worker” type or something. Are you the more social steady corporate worker type, like the one by the water cooler instead of the computer :p?
