4. Boat building with different materials - volume, density, and buoyancy
5. Double slit - wave vs particle light
6. Predicting where toy cars will end up after crashing - momentum
7. Bridge building - Popsicle sticks, glue, and index cards
8. Catapult building - projectile path prediction
9. Bouncing balls of different sizes/densities - gravity
10. Wooden race cars - drag and friction
11. Mentos and Coke
12. Light reflection - additive and subtractive colors
13. DIY lava lamp
14. Graphite circuit

You haven't been posting as much lately. I'm assuming the FT teaching is taking a lot of energy. How's it going? Well, I hope. Curious to read your insights of getting back to a full time grind after living such a different life prior.

Understatement. Why, oh why, did I have the hubris and optimism to believe that taking on a middle school position in a low income district that had been abandoned mid-year was going to be anything besides a complete nightmare? It's so terrible I can't even begin to determine to what extent the full-time status is the problem, besides the fact that I would not ever choose to accept this assignment on a flexible daily basis as a substitute. Throw in the reams of bureaucracy and bullshit wrapped in a bow on top of the extreme behavior disorders and it works out to being an 80 hour/week job at pay rate not much above McDonalds.

(((5Wannabe7))) Yep, that sounds about right for the situation. Actually, I am surprised you aren’t working more or at least spending your precious freetime trying to figure out how to improve that shitshow or hack your situation (I am not recommending that you start as, based on my experience, this situation is snapshot of what to expect there. You are actually probably still honeymooning.). Please don’t beat yourself up for being optimistic, caring, and intelligent.

Don't feel bad about the job being terrible. One of the reasons fewer and fewer college students are entering teaching is because some teaching jobs are very tough with little reward. You are not the only one that feels this way.

Seconding everyone's sentiments. I imagine this will be useful in affirming your choices later on. Not as much FOMO. Hang in there. the end of the school year is not far.

Spring Break could turn out to be the longest paid holiday of your life.

Just learn from this experience.

I worked in a Hellhole...got myself out of it (eventually)...and as dissatisfying as my current position is...it is easy and I'm never risking going back to a Hellhole.

Make a plan to get out of it...it will make it easier to bear... stick to the plan and you will win in the end.

Yeah. That's an admin responsibility.

The last thing you need is a union grievance filed. :?

Now would be an excellent time to bring up expotential growth curves, and why we use petri dishes though...

Be safe. Peace is coming.

My exit plan is early leave of absence for covid-19 due to being in high risk group. I am heading to cabin in about 10 days. It has always been my expectation that I will eventually die from respiratory infection, but 55 is too young!

I already taught the kids handwashing procedure and how to make 1% bleach solution. I also gave lesson on exponential growth and dispelled a few myths such as “Black people can’t get it.” My job is done here.

I have been in seclusion since 3/12. The books I have read or finished reading:

“The Persian Pickle Club” - Dallas
“ Capitalism Alone: The Future of the System that Rules the World”- Milanovic
“The Judas Window”- Dickson
“Modern Lovers”-Straub
“Sucker’s Portfolio” -Vonnegut
“The Diary of a Nobody”- Grossmith
“The Curious Zombie’s Guide to Bayes’ Theorem: Weighing Evidence and Making Decisions: The Math Behind the Odds” - Webster
“Love, Lies, and Liquor”- Beaton
“Ways to Disappear”- Novey
“Viruses: A Very Short Introduction”- Crawford
“The Quiet Gentleman”- Heyer
“Peak Everything: Waking Up to the Century of Declines”- Heinberg
“Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge”- Wilson
“Mooved to Murder”- James
“The Bluestocking and the Rake”- Darcy
“ The Head of the House of Coombe” Burnett
“The Penguin Book of English Short Stories”- Dolley
“She Has Her Mother’s Laugh: The Powers, Perversions, and Potential of Heredity”- Zimmerman
“A Journal of the Plague Year” - Defoe
“Noah’s Compass” - Tyler
“Ready Player One”- Cline
“The Five Stages of Collapse: Laying the Groundwork for Social, Political, and Economic Revolution”- Orlov
“Letourneau’s Used Auto Parts”- Chute

I didn’t get up to speed right away, but my self-imposed challenge i started a couple weeks ago is 200 books by the end of the year. All genres allowed, but strict limit on total schlock. Obviously, I am buffet style reader, so highly unlikely I would read the literary equivalent of cotton candy for every meal.

You're still in Detroit metropolitan or suburbs, right, so I suppose you're not getting much outdoor time?

Yup, I am stuck in hot spot zip code, so venturing outdoors is scary. Luckily, I am on third floor with cathedral windows and balcony overlooking very large pond full of ducks, geese, swans and turtles. So, I can kind of pretend like I am on vacation at lake.
