The other question is how/why the village was depopulated in the first place?

The village I grew up in (population 100 or so) used to have a train station, a butcher, an ice/cream seller, a small sportsfield with a club house, a church, and a public hall. Now, only the hall remains. Basically, the village used to comprise several farms requiring lots of labor. As the farms consolidated (thanks to the banks and too big to fail policies) and motorized, the entire area could be farmed by just a few people. The rest got jobs elsewhere and shopped accordingly. I only remember ever seeing two new houses being built there.

Could i visit you? I'm in voss with an interrail pass. I imagine you're in the vesteralen. How far from narvik is your community? I ask because i fantasised for a decade about moving to troms or finnmark and showing a community there to my partner would be a good way to find out if i should keep entertaining the idea or not.
